Hello dav33arl,
Unfortunately, your installation of Windows XP "Tablet Edition" is nongenuine due to the fact that it is a hacked version of Windows XP Pro published on pirating web sites.
Specs for your model of HP PL996UA#ABA say it came with XP Home Edition---the computer should have a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) for XP Home.
Contact HP to see if you can purchase recovery media for the computer to put the properly licensed XP back onto it. Or try http://www.restoredisks.com/

I can't be absolutely certain - but it's highly likely that your Key is a not-for-resale MSDN Key.
What message do you get when you attempt to activate it?
You could try telephone activation, and speak to an operator.
Is there a COA sticker on your machine? If so, for which version and edition of Windows is it valid?

Thanks for coming in on this, Dan - I usually check the key, but must have missed this one (put it down to the end of a long day!)
