Clearly, this should not be happening. I suspect that you may have something conflicting with the firewall on your system, though it could be a configuration issue.
Please contact OneCare support for help on resolving this issue.

OneCare firewall does not block Windows Update.
What program updates are you referring to? In the firewall settings, do you have it configured to always prompt? If so, all requests to get a network connection will require approval.

It does so block Windows/Microsoft updates right from their own update site. I have to stop the firewall or I can't get updates. Does anyone know a solution?

I have the same problem
Contacting the OneCare support is not usefull as they do not respond. I have had to turn off the firewall to get windows updates, ever since I signed up.

Since OneCare does not block web sites and I am certain that OneCare would not block Windows Update, considering one of the functions of OneCare is to make sure you are always up to date with the latest Windows Updates, your problem is either caused by a conflict with other security software on your PC or it is a Windows Update problem - in which case you should start here for help:

This is happening to me too and I know when it started... when OneCare trial got within 10 days of expiring and the icon turned red in the taskbar. I know this as today I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows. Micrsoft updates was fine and then once i installed onecare again it recognised my sign in was used before and once again the icon turned red and updates is blocked. How can I turn this off? I cant afford to buy the subscription for another 2 weeks.

Even if OneCare is expired, it should not cause problems with Windows Updates.
Since you intend to renew your subscription in 2 weeks, and you believe that the problem involves an expired subscription, uninstall OneCare and reinstall it. Do not activate and you will have a 15 day trial period. Once you are ready to renew, do so via http://billing.microsoft.com and then subscribe/activate the trial copy with your subscription LiveID.

Surprise surprise I just subscribed on my credit card and guess what? The next day windows update worked finally after all this time, without me having to disable onecare. I think you have enough evidence Steve to let Microsoft know there is a problem. After all there are heaps of threads about this if you type it into google.

I'll check into this, but your subscription status should have no bearing on the ability to access Windows Update.

Hi again
I am still having issues with this. I've just bought Vista Home Premium 32bit OEM. I installed onecare and then wanted to download MSN. I went to the download page for this and pressed the "Get It Now button (the orange one). It waited a bit and then said "Page cannot be displayed" I did this about 3 more times to no avail. So I thought hmm maybe onecare is doing this again, so i set it to turn off for an hour and went back to my download. It worked immediately and the "Run, Save, Cancel" popup came up and it went along fine.
This also happened with my new Microsoft VX300 Webcam I installed today. Turned off Onecare and it let me click the link from the Microsoft driver site.
Why does this happen? I shouldn't have to turn off onecare just to download and install programs from Microsoft itself.Tuesday, January 6, 2009 12:09 PM -

Hi, Mookster1979.
I don't know why OneCare would be blocking these downloads. They don't get blocked for me. Unless the action is deemed to be malicious from a known bad program, OneCare should at least be presenting a prompt that it is blocking and ask for permission that you would need to grant twice on Vista due to UAC.
The fact that disabling the firewall allows the download to proceed would normally lead me to suspect a conflict with another firewall or security software. If you just did a clean install with an OEM disc, I wouldn't expect that to be the case. What else had you installed or configured before or after OneCare and the start of the problem?
