unauthorized change genuine on diagnostics RRS feed

  • I read the forum enough to revert my errors to unuathorized change vs not genuine 
    by restoring system to yesterday. I am locked out of normal operation (unauthorized change to
    windows). cmd prompt cannot be run in safe mode (system 32 access denied). Starting
    normally (as normal as locked into a browser can be) I forgot the exact error but it's
    a not enough resources type error. I'm on a laptop so Vista came already loaded. I've had
    since around April and it was working fine until just now.

  • Hello isisnebthet,

      If you are unable to install Service Pack 1, the only other thing I can suggest (besides reinstalling Vista) is running a system scan.  The scan will look for bad files and will Attempt to repair it. I didn't suggest it before because I haven't had much luck with it.

    To run the scan:
    1) Login to Vista in Regular Mode (not safe mode)
    2) Launch the internet browser
    3) Type: %windir%\system32 into the place you usually type in URLs and hit 'Enter'(a security pop-up may come up, click "allow")
    4) The 'system32' folder will open
    5) Scoll down till you find the file 'cmd.exe'
    6) Right-click the file and select 'Run as Administrator'
    7) type: sfc /scannow

    The scan may or may not be able to restore the file.
    ~If it does, reboot twice and your Vista should load without error.
    ~If it doesn't, the next step would be to reinstall Vista.
    NOTE: be sure to backup all your importent files off the computer, before reinstall.

    The core to your particular issue centers on the line in your Diagnostic Report that reads:

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\Slsvc.exe[6.0.6000.16509]

      This line means that the file Slsvc.exe (version 6.0.6000.16509) has been modified or become corrupt.  Vista knows this because it compares the file's Signature Hash (think fingerprint) with a recourd of what the signature hash should be. If a file changes in any way, it's Signature Hash changes, as well. So if the Slsvc.exe's signature hash doesn't match with Vista's recourds, Vista knows the file has been changed.  Since this file deals with Licensing, Vista assumes the file was changed in an attempt to bypass product activation and goes into Reduce Functionality Mode.

      To fix this, you just need to either

    a) Repair or replace the bad file with a good one, of the same version #.

    or

    b) Replace the bad file with a good one, of a higher version number, thru an Update. (it needs to be thru an Update because an Update replaces the file and updates Vista's record of the new file's new Signature Hash).

     

      My suggestion would be to do option b) by installing Service Pack 1 for Vista. It contains a higher version of Slsvc.exe.  to do this, go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en  click the Download button. You should then be given the option to Run, Save or Cancel...select Save. In the 'Save To' window, I strongly suggest saving to the desktop. Once it finishes downloading, double-clik the file to run it. Once it is complete, reboot at lest two times (this is so all the systems have reset to a Genuine state). 

    You can then go to  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click the Validate Windows button, to confirm all the issue is resolved.

  • Hello isisnebthet,

      If you are unable to install Service Pack 1, the only other thing I can suggest (besides reinstalling Vista) is running a system scan.  The scan will look for bad files and will Attempt to repair it. I didn't suggest it before because I haven't had much luck with it.

    To run the scan:
    1) Login to Vista in Regular Mode (not safe mode)
    2) Launch the internet browser
    3) Type: %windir%\system32 into the place you usually type in URLs and hit 'Enter'(a security pop-up may come up, click "allow")
    4) The 'system32' folder will open
    5) Scoll down till you find the file 'cmd.exe'
    6) Right-click the file and select 'Run as Administrator'
    7) type: sfc /scannow

    The scan may or may not be able to restore the file.
    ~If it does, reboot twice and your Vista should load without error.
    ~If it doesn't, the next step would be to reinstall Vista.
    NOTE: be sure to backup all your importent files off the computer, before reinstall.

  • That step actually demanded a disc on boot up and locked safe mode with windows cannot be activated in safe mode. I got lucky somewhere and it let me into safe mode once which I immediately restored to previous and was able to back up my important files then called Acer to figure out just how to get into restore.  I suppose I should have done that a lot sooner. It looked like from reading the forums it's usually pretty easy to resolve?

      Yes, it can usually be fixed pretty easily, but to be honest, your description of the issue sounded more severe then what I usually see. My gut feeling is there was something else happening in Vista that was contributing to the issue, which I couldn’t see from the diagnostic report. 

      I don't like telling people to reinstall, but in your case, I think it is probably the best way to know you have completely fixed the issue.
