XP Professional Validation Issues

Question
-
I have been running what I thought was a genuine copy of Windows XP Professional on a custom built computer for ~ 1.5 years. Last Monday, I received the WGA popup, notifying me that my copy may be conterfeit. I clicked on the prompt to validate, and received the following message on the page at his address:
"Windows Validation Error", and an error code of 0x80080102.
I ran the diagnostics tools - everything passed as far as system setup, tried the alternate method of validating, which brought be back to the same error page. This is my diagnostic report:

I reported this initial error to Microsoft, received a reply back that did not address the error code, but gave me my options for "getting Genuine".
Option 1 was to report this to the Piracy people - which I did, but they did not offer the supposed free replacement software.
Option 2 was to get a replacement key. When I click on the link they supplied, I end up at the same error page. So I called support. The gave me a new key over the phone. I used the Key Update Tool - It processed through, but came
up with another error code: 3-0x80004005. I called support again about this error message (India) - they gave me some gobbygook about how the key I received was a retail key........and told me I needed to get the WGA Kit (Option 3).
My thought is that since I did not receive my new key electronically, I am missing a file that verifies the purchase.
I would try to purchase electronically, but I can't get there because I am continually directed to the original error page.
Please tell me there has to be another solution???

Frustrated,
Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation. Unfortunately, the product key used to install both your operating system and Office Suite is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder. As a rule, VLK editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.
If you want to keep Windows XP Pro installed on the computer, then your best option is to participate in the Genuine Windows Offer and purchase a WGA Kit for $149 USD. You will be emailed a Product Key that can be used immediately for your currently non- genuine installation of XP Pro, and then about 2-3 weeks later you will receive a genuine Microsoft Windows XP Pro full retail CD and COA, which you can use to do a clean installation (recommended).
Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:
https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx
First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy. Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.
Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx who have become victims. Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided. Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices. You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs as illustrated here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/content.aspx?displaylang=en&pg=counterfeit
Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.
Thank you,

Thanks for your reply, but I have heard most of this before. The problem is that due to these error pages that are popping up, I cannot access the "purchase a genuine windows license" option. Why can't this validation process complete - telling me that I am not geniune?

I have had this same problem now, i bought a pc, custom build, cost me £570. I have had it since january and now it is saying its counterfit, the thing is i bought it in a computer fair, which is in birmingham and happens to be about 3 hours drive from where i live. I had the pc so i could do graphic design for my course (civil engineering) but now its useless. Now being a student, i refuse to cough up that ridiculous amount of money to make xp genuine, when i could wait till october and buy windows 7 for the same price.Which at the moment is pre-order for £69.99 in most shops. Tell me how Microsoft can justify doing this? Since i've had this genuine notification, my pc has been constantly crashing, i've been losing work and files because they are not saving properly. Now all i did was buy a computer, where have i done wrong for Microsoft to be messing me around like this?Sunday, August 9, 2009 4:27 PM

Hello smithy59,
Please be aware that most stores advertising the inexpensive pre-order price for Windows 7 are advertising the price for the Upgrade license, which requires a Genuine version of Windows XP or Vista to already be installed on the computer being upgraded. Windows 7 Upgrade will refuse to execute an upgrade to a nongenuine installation of XP or Vista.
The WGA programs are not designed to decrease the reliability of the computer one bit, so please do not blame WGA for the problems your computer is having. What you are experiencing with your pirated installation of XP is not all that uncommon---nongenuine Windows installations are very often "hacked and cracked" in order to make them run illegally, and in the process such hacking often compromises the integrity and reliability of the Operating System.
I don't know if you can find an offer such as the one below in Great Britain, but if you could find it, it would seem to be a very good solution to your current problem. It is a 64bit OEM license for Windows Vista Business with a free upgrade coupon for Windows 7 Professional, selling for less than the WGA kit price.

Hello gibahome,
If you are experiencing a problem with Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications on your computer, we cannot help you based on someone else's post, we need your specific information.
Please start your own new thread.
Please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.
Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.
1. After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.
2. Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.
Next look on the computer itself, in the documentation you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). If you have one, tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key that may be printed on the CoA.
Not sure what to look for? See this page for reference: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.
For great advice on all topics XP, visit http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxpFriday, September 25, 2009 5:45 PM -
I recently purchased a copy of Windows XP Pro online, installed it and now am getting the "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" error message.
Followed all the step outlined in the announcements section of this thread (RESOLVE button not available).
I do have the CD with the COA. It's (again) Windows XP Pro and the label with the key on it reads "OEM Software". Does not have the computer manufacturer's name on it.

Hello Morrigan9999,
Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:
WGA Data-->

Windows Product Key: *****-*****-MDFP2-T4QJX-MTMXD
Windows Product Key Hash: w4dE7fC3ki8W01t0SpIIvWusGtQ=
Windows Product ID: 76487-640-7325972-23314
Windows Product ID Type: 1
Windows License Type: Volume
Windows OS version: 5.1.2600.2.00010100.3.0.proRight now, your computer has a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro installed (Line 10), and that installation was done with a Invalid Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2). The VLK used on your nongenuine installation of XP Pro was invalidated because it was made with a pirating program called a Key generator and was never a Genuine product key issued by Microsoft.
Also note that the installed license for XP Pro is a Volume License. As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Additionally, VL editions are Upgrade licenses ONLY, and therfore cannot be used as the primary or base license for a computer.
This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.
The next step in the process is to look on the computer, or with the materials you received with the computer, or with your retail purchase of Windows, to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticty (CoA). If you have one, tell us about the CoA. Tell us:1. What edition of Windows is it for, XP Home, XP Pro, or XP Media Center, or some other version of Windows?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key that may be printed on your CoA.
Not sure what to look for? Click here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
If there is a CoA, that means the computer is almost certainly still licensed to run the version and edition of Windows described on the CoA.
If the CoA says that it is for XP Professional, the first thing to try is running the Product Key Updater utility: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=45668
If the CoA is for any version or edition of Windows other than XP Professional, then your only available solution is to backup and offload your data, then use the Recovery Solution provided with the computer to put back the original factory installation of Windows (as described on the CoA) that may have come with the computer. The recovery solution may be one or more Recovery discs and/or Operating System (OS) Reinstallation discs, a hidden recovery partition, or both. If you have to run the recovery, please visit the model-specific support page at the support pages of the computer's manufacturer to learn more about how to do that procedure.
If there is no CoA on the computer and you do not have retail materials with a CoA, that means the computer is not licensed to run Windows. In order to continue to use the computer with Windows, you would need to purchase a valid genuine license for Windows from a trusted local or online retailer, or directly from Microsoft by participating in the Genuine Windows offer as described in the FAQ: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EFIAC

Thanks Dan.
I guess I'll have to go back to the seller (Ebay) who has promised me to send me a retail copy of XP Pro if I continue to have problems.
As far as going back to what I received with the original computer, I'll have to check that with the seller as well. I don't recall receiving any CoA with the original computer and there's no CoA on the computer itself.
Guess, lesson learned...never buy a OEM version of any software online? :)
Assuming that I cannot get cooperation from the seller of this XP Pro software (i.e. assuming they fail to send me a retail version of the software...which I assume will be valid) what would you recommend I can do to report them? Seems like software conterfeiting to me if they knew about it.Monday, September 28, 2009 2:01 PM -
Hello morrigan9999,
If you think you might be in a counterfeiting situation, let's work on these items:
1. First, have a look at the Product Key (PK) on the CoA that came with the OEM license kit you got on eBay. Compare the last three sets of characters on the CoA to what was reported by the mgadiag report, MDFP2-T4QJX-MTMXD.
1a. If the PKs don't match, try changing the installed PK to the PK on the CoA by using the PK updater utility http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=45668 If the utility can make the change, do so, then restart and rerun the mgadiag utility to see if your installation was converted to a genuine installation.
1b. If the PK updater cannot make the change, or if the PKs do match, then move on to the next item below.
2. Have a close look at the CD that came with the licensing kit. Does the CD have "For distribution only with a new PC. For product support, please contact your computer manufacturer" or wording along those lines in the upper left quadrant of the disc?
3. Still looking at the disc, examine the hologram closely, especially around the edge of the disc. Is the hologram a thin label affixed to the top surface of the disc, or is it embedded within the plastic of the disc itself?
4. Put the CD in the computer and navigate to the \i386 folder and look for a file named setupp.ini. This is a small text file with two sections. Please post the contents of the second section.

Please post your own problems in your own NEW thread - with a copy of your MGADiag report.
Please also tell us whether you machine has a COA sticker, and for which Operating System it is valid.
