Windows Home Server Updates Failed RRS feed

  • Question

  • I heard the news today that PP2 was released.  I rushed home to see if Windows Update had automatically updated my server (like it did with PP1) and sadly I learnt that it did not.  No problem.  I can click on the Update Now button.  Unfortunately I get this message:

    Windows Home Server Updates Failed
Windows Home Server Installation can not complete.  Please try again later.  If the problem persists restart the home server.

Well, I restarted the server and still get the same message.  Is this because of all the servers updating as we speak and I just need to be patient OR could I have some configuration issue.  All my other computers access Windows Update no problem and my home server has not had this problem in the past.

I really am looking for to MP4 support, improved remote access and something else I cannot remember right now.

  • I figured it out.  My ISP was acquired by a new Cable company and they have changed the DNS server addresses.  All my desktops use DHCP and therefore get the updated DNS address.  My Home Server has static addresses.  After updating the DNS address all seems to be working again.

  • Windows Home Server Console: 6.0.1800.0
Windows Home Server Backup & Restore: 6.0.1800.36
Windows Home Server Drive Extender: 6.0.1800.24
Windows Home Server Remote Access: 6.0.1800.0
Windows Home Server Storage Manager: 6.0.1800.24

I have a feeling that I may have a network issue.  Everything seems to be working fine between my machines and my home server and all of my desktops can connect to the internet.  I have a feeling my home server is not connecting to the internet as I tried a RD connection to the home server, opened the browser and fail accessing any websites.  Not sure why this is happening as the ipconfig settings are the same as my desktops.

  • Hi,
this would not happen, if you point the DNS server address in the network configurations to the IP address of your router.
Using the IP address of the ISPs DNS server directly often calls for trouble, if you need to resolve internal names via DNS.

  • Thanks for the suggestion.  I have redirected the server to the router for DNS entries.
