  You will need to use Fetch XML to create custom reports in CRM Online. You cannot use regular SQL queries because the SQL database for CRM Online is not exposed to developers. You can use Visual Studio (BIDS) and install the Report Authoring Extensions that enables FetchXML based reporting.
