Today I bought Windows 7 Home Premium off the Microsoft website, got the receipt with the Product Key. I'm running Windows XP Professional SP3, so I downloaded the Windows Product Key Activation Tool to activate Windows 7. I entered the 25-digit product
key by hand, it's invalid, I copy/paste from the receipt page, it's still invalid. Can anyone over at Microsoft help me sort this out? The Activation Tool simply won't accept the Product Key.
Your have to INSTALL the operating system before you can activate it - download the installation ISO file from the MS/Digital River website it directed you to, create the DVD, and then do the installation.
Note that you will have to reinstall all your applications afterwards, as direct upgrades from Windows XP aren't possible.
