Restore Tool Won't Work on Windows 7

Question
-
New computer running windows 7 starter and trying to recover backup files from external hard drive that were backed up from my now crashed vista machine. I've tried to run the recovery tool software twice, but it says it's not supported on my operating system (error ID: 0003-80004005). Any ideas on how to recover my One Care Live backup files? I do have One Care also installed on my XP machine, but for some reason that machine doesn't see the files backed up from the Vista machine.

I'm not sure of why you are seeing the unsupported operating system error message but there are a few things you can try. You can install the tool on the XP computer, restore the files to a folder on the external drive, then copy and paste them to the Windows 7 computer. Another option is to use One Care on the XP computer, perform a custom restore to a folder on the external drive, then copy and paste the files where needed. When performing the custom restore select files from another computer as the backup file source.
You can also contact support for help with getting the restore tool installed on the Windows 7 computer. How to reach support - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/30400b52-7f26-4ba0-bc18-17e305329d90

Thanks Jim, I've tried using the One Care on the XP computer to do exactly what you recommended, but for some reason even when I select "files from another computer as the backup file source" it doesn't see any other files except those backed up from the XP computer (I have verified that there are backed up files from my crashed Vista computer on the external drive). I'll try contacting support to see if they can help, thanks.
Is the restore tool different than the actual restore option in the one care program on XP?
Thanks again,

The Restore Tool is a stripped down version of OneCare that is allowed to install on Windows 7 in addition to XP and Vista, so the functionality is the same. For that reason, I find it odd that you were unable to install it and now that you are also having problems seeing and opening the backup from the Vista machine.
If you wish to bypass the support option, there is a manual recovery process. It can be painful, though.
The backups are able to opened by WinZip and other 3rd party Zip programs. You can extract the files from within the .zip files and move them to their desired location. One caveat is that large files are split by the OneCare backup and span more than one archive (.zip) file. When you encounter a file that has been split, it needs to be rejoined using another utility. These files would need to be renamed to .001, .002, .003, etc. in order to be rejoined by this free utility: http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/
