  • I have read Msn blog http://blogs.msdn.com/webmaster/ on site ranking, but Msn doesn't seem to follow their own guide lines. If you go to search "trucker services u s" Out of the top 20 sites I can see the 1st, 7th, 8th 13th, 16th & 20th ranked site, coming up under this search by your blogs statement (skipping the good html). The 2nd ranked site https://www.otwtruckers.com  you get access forbidden and this is ranked 2nd HOW??? The 3rd is a 51 word news report by npr, WHERE IS THE UNIQUE CONTENT, CUSTOMERS LANGUAGE AND KEYWORDS??? The 4th a news report by worldnetdaily WHERE IS THE UNIQUE CONTENT??? The 5th a news report by worldnetdailyWHERE IS THE UNIQUE CONTENT??? The 6th a news report by cnn WHERE IS THE UNIQUE CONTENT??? The 9th a news report by ksl WHERE IS THE UNIQUE CONTENT??? The 10th a news report by azstarnet WHERE IS THE UNIQUE CONTENT??? The 11th and 12th are by mexico trucker but I get Oops! The page you're looking for can't be found But wait, try this: AND YET THIS RANKED IN THE TOP 20. The 14th & 15th site a news report by 9 news WHERE IS THE UNIQUE CONTENT??? The 17th a news report by the statesman WHERE IS THE UNIQUE CONTENT??? The 18th & 19 th a news report by topix WHERE IS THE UNIQUE CONTENT??? It gets worse as you go.

Can you tell me how are we to follow Msn guide lines for indexing and ranking if Msn doesn't.

  • The number one factor in ranking is getting good quality backlinks no matter what anyone says. Get quality backlinks and you will be golden. Don't expect to rank overnight. Give yourself a year or two. Patience will pay off but don't slack off with the link building as you may have very hungry competitorsWink

  • Irmcspeedy,

I recommend reading a book called "Linked: The New Science of Networks".   It explaines the basic reasoning.   Yes content matters alot.   But in your example, the content has changed over time.  This will have a negative effect for that site and it won't continue to rank.

  • Still learning the whole SEO concept but what I have seen/observed is that 1st off if your site already has a high PR like Topix does keywords on there site mean more than the average joe's site that is actually all about that keyword. Sites are indexed better or higher because of the way they placed there keywords. Everything comes into play (ie: links with keywords, general text placement, titles on links, how many keywords per page, etc...). It's been a battle for me as well. But I have seen progress I have gone from pg 7-10 on google to pg 2-3 on google with the keywords I have concentrated on.

  • When you use a search engine to find something online, are you looking for links or content? The number 2 site under the search I used you get access denied, there is nothing there but is ranked 2nd HOW, is it just a link farm? All these news cast, if I am looking for products and services what good is a news cast going to do me? If I was looking for news I would have included it in my search. Yes I agree links should help site ranking, but giving site ranking based on links and not content, how does this give search results for what a person is looking for? Shouldn't ranking be based on relevance to what is being searched? If it shouldn't, why bother searching for anything in perticular?

  • Good answer.

We do look at a lot of factors, but the best thing is still developing quality backlinks.
