And then what .... RRS feed

  • Question

  • I get this message when trying to download an update to install manually. I need to do this because the update will not install in the usual way (I have tried over three days but the 80071A90 error persists). I have downloaded and run MGADiag.exe which produces many diagnostics and apparently completes successfully.

But the error persists. I don't know where to get an updated version of course. Oh, the system clock is correct. So what next?

  • The GenuineCheck in Windows 7 can only be done live - using an ActiveX control.

Firefox has to have an add-in installed to be able to cope with ActiveX - until recently, Chrome could deal with ActiveX, but it sounds like they've removed support for it. (I haven't tested lately).

  • MGADiag is almost purely a diagnostics program - it doesn't solve the problem!

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
     Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • There appears to be no problem with either activation or validation on your machine

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941 may help - if not I suggest that you repost your query in the specialist Windows Updates forum on Answers...

  • I resolved this by using Internet  Explorer to manually download updates.  Firefox (which I was using) nor Google Chrome let me download updates for manual installation. Attempting to use them take you to http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/5/6/E5611B10-0D6D-4117-8430-A67417AA88CD/GenuineCheck.exe but this is obsolete software for Windows 7. Run it and you get "This version of Windows Genuine Advantage validation tool is no longer supported . Pease download the newest version and ensure your system clock is accurate". The solution is to use IE which apparently includes the genuine check.
