  • OK, here is where you now stand:

    1. The current Windows 7 Professional installation was performed using a Volume License Windows 7 DVD
    2. This DVD was not downloaded from Digital River since they only offer "retail" software
    3. A retail Windows 7 product key cannot be used with a Volume License installation of Windows 7
    4. You'll need to acquire a genuine "retail" Windows 7 DVD and "Full Version Retail" product key, reformat the drive and perform a "clean install".

The Key here is a KMS Volume License Key – which requires a special KMS Activation server to activate against.
Since you are an end-user, you obviously have no such server.

From where did you get this copy of Win 7 Pro? – How did you get this Key?
If you purchased this Key, you were sold a counterfeit copy of Windows – Volume Licenses are only sold to organisations for use on their own machines.

Your Key is almost certainly NOT the one in this report – you need to change the Key to the one that came with the disk.

i got the software and product key through digital river i think? it was a microsoft promotion. as i say my problem is not the product key, it is typing in the product key that it wont let me do with the error screen.

there was no software cd just a download link and a product key which are on a deleted email address now.

Are you entering the Key shown in the report?
If so, it’s the wrong one.
Either log back into your MS Store account (if you got it from there) and retrieve your key from there, or try ringing Digital River’s help lines

If you’re entering the Key and being told during the process that you’re entering a wrong character – you are. Some characters are not allowed in Product Keys. They are EUIOASLZN and 10. If your Key looks as if it contains one of them – it doesn’t.

  • You have installed a Volume License version of Windows 7 professional.  A Volume License can only be used as an upgrade.  Since you stated you built your own computer, what Windows 7 operating system did you install that makes the PC eligible for the Windows 7 Professional Volume License Upgrade?

"You cannot buy full Windows operating system licenses for desktop PCs through Microsoft Volume Licensing programs. Volume Licensing only provides Windows upgrade licenses. You must first have licensed and installed a "qualified" full desktop PC operating system on your device before you are eligible to acquire an upgrade license for the Windows desktop PC operating system for that device through Microsoft Volume Licensing programs."

  • You should still have the case in which the disk came- and the label on it or with it, that has the Product Key on it.

The only other thing you can do is contact whoever it was you bought it from and see if they have a record - as I say, if you got it from the MS Store, then they'll have a record, Digital River may have a record, but anyone else, you may be out of luck.

Dabs.com or scan.co.uk – they tend to be the cheapest I’ve found, and they are reputable:)

I’m not certain that a Key replacement will work to get from a Volume License install to a Retail install
You would need to purchase the Full Retail Pro pack – try just changing the Key first.
If that doesn’t work, you may be able to use the disk to do a repair (in-place Upgrade) install – again, you have nothing to lose  by trying it.

  • A Windows 7 retail product key will not work with a Windows 7 installation that used a Windows 7 Volume License disk to install.  Only a retail Windows 7 installation DVD can be used.  The OP would have to perform a "clean install" using a retail Windows 7 DVD if he wishes to use a retail Windows 7 product key.

  • hi there, thanks for all the comments guys. i just realised something. the clean install i used was not via the download from digital river. i bought a windows 7 install disc of ebay for £10.00 which allows me to either repair windows 7 or install a clean installation. this is how i put a fresh installation on the computer. does this help with any advice? i just want a working system to be honest. could i try using the disc to upgrade windows and enter the key then or will it not work?

    many thanks..
