Checking WHS2011 Hard Disks

Question

Is there any difference between running chkdsk /r on a storage drive and using the Dashboard "Check and Repair" functionality? Can I assume that only the latter can be used for a server backup drive as it is not given a drive letter?

Based on the time taken for the two processes, I guess the answer is that "Check and Repair" does not do a sector scan.

If you log on to your server's desktop (required to run chkdsk /r anyway) you can use the Disk Management tool in Server Manager to run chkdsk on any partition, whether it's assigned a drive letter or not. :)
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)Thursday, October 6, 2011 12:48 AM -
Found a WHS and WHS2011 add-on site that has something that might work for you http://www.covecube.com/ Click on projects.
One project is Stillbit; you can have it ruuning in back ground, it appears to be a "high end" check disk program. I D/L'd it and it does work; can't decide if I want to buy it.
Looks like there's also a link to a company working on a Disk Extender (DE) solution for WHS 2011.
