Help! Validation went bad? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Against my better judgement I gave into the constant reminders to update my Windows Media Player.  All of a sudden I am getting information that I don't have a valid copy of XP.  Rather than going through this, I was going to just get the key thing to make it ok but I am disabled and can no way afford $149.00 for it, thats 1/3 of my monthly money!  I have other Windows downloads, the media player being one of them, that were trouble free!  I just found out that I can't paste and copy my test results either!  The one line that was in red was "geographically blocked PID."  After the last test I ran I was given the  five diget number that I was told to look for. This is a second hand PC and the XP was in it to begin with.  About 18 months ago I had a "PC Doctor" look at it because of problems.  He took it out of here and when he brought it back he told me that he had taken the system completely out because I had a virus that he couldn't remove.  Since everything was the same as it had been I thought I still had my original system.  Maye not under the circumstances! I don't know how to reach him as I was not happy with his course of action with out speaking to me first.  At that time I throw his card away!  I have just spent hours trying to get to the bottom of this and don't have the base kowledge to work this out myself.  Please, can someone help me out?  What happens if I can't get this fixed?

  • Aggiem,

Your HP most likely came with XP Home preinstalled by HP.

See if you can order a Recovery CD from HP or from www.restoredisks.com.

The HP recovery CD will install on your computer without the need for a Product Key and will be 100% genuine.

  • AggieM,

What is the make and model of computer?

Please look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticty (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

  • Hi Dan,

Thank you for reaponding so quickly.

I'm not sure where to look for the answers to #'s 2 and 3.  I have looked  everywhere I can think of and find no information that even sounds like those two inquires.

The PC is a HP pavilion 510w.  I bought it used a few years ago and didn't get any papers with it.  There are two small stickers on the front but nothing with any numbers.  One is for "intel inside ,celeron" and the second says "designed for microsoft windows XP."

The diagnostic report identified the XP info. as follows.

    version: 5.1.2600.2.00010100.2.0. pro

Farther down it says: WGA version registered 1.5.723.1.

I checked into my systems information and got:

    microsoft windows xp / professional / version 2002 / service pack 2.

It also said "intel celeron processor."

I hope that can help.  I tried going to th hyperlink reference but it is very confusing when you don't understand the inter workings of a PC.  There are no identifying stickers anywhere on or inside the case of the PC.
