(Re)Validating windows after having to reinstall RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings, and thanks in advance for the time taken to read this post.

I'm a Widows XP SP3 user, with a genuine copy obtained from MSDNAA. Now, my PC was, in all aspects, old, carrying a nearly 5 year old AMD CPU on a 5-year old motherboard. This motherboard malfunctioned and utterly burned this week. Obviously, I couldn't find a compatible motherboard for my CPU, and as such, decided to upgrade several pieces of the computer.

You can see where I am getting at, but after installing the new motherboard, CPU, ram and graphics card, my windows showed me the "This computer's hardware has changed significantly and you must validate your copy of windows again" message. And since I'm here, you can guess that it didn't work. It says my product key is in use (most likely being used by my "old" computer, which microsoft still considers active), and as such I cannot validate.

My question is whether i can solve this via internet instead of having to use the "activate via phone" option. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Below goes the MGA diagnostic tool info (sorry if I am not supposed to post it here). Any tip on what to do, even if it is "You need to do it via phone" or "You can't do anything about it" would help me immensely.

  • C.P.F.Santos,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum.  I ran your Diagnostic Results and they explained you have a good Product Key and XP is Not Activated. Telephone Activation is the best pathway for you at this point.

    From the Desktop:

Click Start,  All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Activate Windows.

Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the taskbar notification area next to the clock.

Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows now.

Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement, click Back, and then click Next.

Follow the steps in the “Activate Windows by phone” dialog box, and then click Next.

Note The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.

When activation is completed and you receive the following message:

You have successfully activated your copy of Windows

    Then click OK.

Also you may reference the following site for various Telephone Activation Centers:

For more information on how to activate Windows XP see the following link:

Thank you for visiting the WGA program forum.
