Aero no longer works after Vista Validation Issue RRS feed

  • Question

  •

Two days ago I turned on my computer and a screen informed me that my Windows Vista was not "genuine" and was counterfeited.

It had me re-enter by Windows Product Key number, which I did. Now, ever since then, Windows Aero doesn't work... when I try to turn the Aero appearance setting on, I get an error message that says: "The visual styles could not be applied."

I tried using System Restore to roll my computer back a few days (I was thinking maybe the recent Windows Updates did something), but my computer can't do a proper Restore now either. I select a restore date, the computer restarts, and then it comes back on with an error saying: "System Restore did not complete successfully. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore."

I really want to get my Vista working properly again... please help! Thanks.

    Here's my diagnostic report:

  • Hi yej,

Did you try the steps I posted above (including the 2 reboots)?  If so and Aero still won't run, I can only conclude that it is not being caused by Windows Genuine Advantage and is a general Vista bug/issue.  This type of issue would be outside my area of knowledge and I suggest reposting your issue to one of the Vista Newgroups http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=42486 (be sure to make it clear that it has been found that this issue is not caused by a WGA Genuin/Non-Genuin issue, or they may refer you back to me) or go to http://microsoft.com/support for addional support options.

    Thank you,

  • Hello yej,

I see that you had a Tamper even on 02/16/2008, but now your Diagnostic Report shows as Genuine and I don't see any error codes. The issue may be resolve.  To confirm that the issue is resolved, please

    1) go to http://microsoft.com/genuine and click the Validate Windows button.

    2) If the Validate wWindows processes without error, reboot 2 times.

If (after you try the above steps) Vista is still displaying that it is non-genuine, Re-run and post and updated Diagnostic Report.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Darin,

I appreciate the time you're taking to help me.

Yes, I think my Windows is displaying that it is genuine, but that is no longer the problem.

The problem is that ever since I had that first non-genuine error, the Aero feature on Windows Vista has not been working. I would really like to get Aero back up so that it doesn't look like I'm running Windows 98 here.

I did follow your steps, and yeah, Aero still won't run.

It just seems linked to the Genuine issue, since it literally happened right after the Genuine error.

I'll try to find help on the newsgroup. Thanks.
