Firewall will not start or turns off RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I have XP Media edition on a Dell 410 XPS with SP3.  After 4 months of using OneCare, it would not start and gives a red warningt.  Tried reinstall, tried repair tool.  I have no other AV programs on computer but do have Spware Doctor and that is turned off.   I can not change settings in Security center.  After reinstall, I ran a negative scan.  15 minutes later on reboot, the problem continues.

  • I am not familiar with Spyware Doctor but many antispyware products run services in the background even when the program is turned off. I suggest uninstalling Spyware Doctor, then uninstall One Care, run the install cleanup tool - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=828910&SiteID=2 then reinstall One Care. If this does not resolve the issue please contact support. How to reach support - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2421771&SiteID=2

  • Thanks, your suggestion worked.  I ran the uninstall tool which allowed a clean install of OneCare.  I was about to rename the product as OnceCare.  I have used all three installs on this one computer.  How do I reinstall OneCare again if it needs to be done without a new charge?

  • You are welcome. Reinstalling on the same computer counts as one installation so you will be able to reinstall if needed and still be able to add two additional computers if you so choose.

  • I recently updated from Windows Vista Business to Ultimate.

After the update I had to re-subscribe my OneCare, and I have an issue with the fire wall not being able to be turned back on.

    My question has two parts

    A) Did my having to re-subscribe count as a second computer and leave me with only one more?

    B) Should I use the instructions above to fix my issue with the firewall or is there something with Ultimate that is causing the problem?

    Thanks,
    Matt

  • Hello Matt, reinstalling One Care does not count as a second computer. The firewall issue is not related to Vista Ultimate so I recommend using the firewall repair tool first - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2468376&SiteID=2
