Why doesn't MS include/develop A 64bit restore CD? RRS feed

  • Question

  • With the increasing production of 64bit OS (Vista) systems, A 64bit WHS Restore CD ISO download would be nice!!

  • I don't see the need for it.  I was running vista 64 bit and the regular restore CD worked with no problems.  I don't think that it would matter if the restore CD is 64 or 32, it's pretty much a boot type CD/ DVD.

  • I respectfully disagree, here is a quote from an MS tech brief:

    "Important
If you are restoring from a 64-bit computer the drivers that are stored in the backup will be 64-bit.  These will not function with the 32-bit restore CD.  Therefore it may be necessary to obtain 32-bit versions of the network driver and storage-device drivers for your 64-bit computer, while doing a restore of your home computer."

  • That's funny (as in weird)

If you were to restore from the restore CD, would it use generic nic drivers just to connect to the server?  I restore a 64 bit system and I used the regular restore CD.  I'm think restoring from a PC with a new drive or something like that.

  • 32 bit offers maximum compatibility for the mainstream, while providing instructions for using a 32 bit driver offers a workaround for the small number of people with a 64 bit OS. Also, the Restore CD uses WinPE which, I believe, is 32 bit only.

  • Ken,
If you go to Dell's site you will see a majority of the new systems are now being built with 64bit OS's installed.
So why not offer both for a smooth restore procedure? there is definitely a need.
I do believe a 64bit WHS version is in the works also.

I tried a restore with the Cd loaded in my 64bit client (Dell 435T) and it showed all the drivers had loaded successfully however, it could not find the server. When I tried manually it said I did not have a network connection.

  • I'm not able to speak to future versions of Windows Home Server, but 64 bit desktops are still a very low percentage of the target audience. As long as that's true, it makes more sense to have a 32 bit Restore CD if you're going to have only one version; it will work on 64 bit hardware without problems. (The driver issue isn't a hardware problem...) And there are excellent reasons to have only one version.

Regarding Dell and other OEMs: Dell is one among many. Most vendors are still shipping a 32 bit OS as standard, with 64 bit an option. I expect that to change over time, but most home computers won't be running a 64 bit OS for at least another year (probably more).

  • Would you agree there will be a need in the near future for a 64bit restore CD?

"According to Microsoft sources, over 25% of all Vista sales in Q4 2008 were 64-bit"

  • Maybe one day in the future there will be a WHS with the option of running in 32 or 64 bit.

  • I understand that you want it, and I agree with you, never mind what else I may have said above. After all, the laptop I run my photography business off of is a 64 bit Vista Ultimate machine, and of course the Restore CD won't load the drivers that WHS backs up. :P

But the truth of the matter is that 25% of Vista sales isn't a very large percentage of overall Windows sales, because there's no compelling reason for a home user to switch from the XP desktop or laptop they have today unless they buy a new computer. And all those XP installations are 32 bit. Once Windows 7 hits the streets the situation will begin to change and Microsoft will have a much greater need for good 64 bit driver support in the Restore CD. Until then, there are very usable workarounds for most people.

So need in the near future is going to depend on just how "near" you have in mind. 24 months? Almost certainly a 64 bit Restore CD (or a solution that works as well as a 64 bit Restore CD would) will be needed. 18 months? Probably. 6 months? Probably not.

  • Sir,

Well put, I am speaking for those users who will ask "what is a driver?" . I believe a large number of computer users in my generation (baby boomer) and others will not have the patients/knowledge to implement the work around.

It is a very old tread here but with Win 7 arrival here in Ottawa region in Canada and from my pre order also I got the 64 bits and with all the article of Microsoft regarding 64 bits.

I decided to make the plunge and we are now in that new year "now" as it is not even the new year yet and all the PC I see on sale around are Win 7 64 bits.

The marker is pushing big time for the 64 bits and Microsoft also.

Your tough because right now I feel that I have to maintain two set of backup now.
