Accessing Shared File Folders via the Internet RRS feed

  • Question

  • On WHS v.1, I was able to use an add-in called "Webfolders" that allowed me to "map a folder" as a drive in Windows Explorer and access that folder via the Internet.

Is this possible with the share folders in WHS 2011 and if so, any idea how I would do this?

  • Well it would be I didn't have the permissions for the User set correctly in the dashboard!  Silly me! Okay - this works like a champ.  Good bye WHS v.1!

  • Okay - I think I figured this out.  However, when I add the Virtual Directory for the Server Folder, it only lists four of the six folders when I access it.  Anyone have any ideas why this is?  All of the permissions seem to be correct.

  • Before you get too happy, I suggest you consider that security best practice for IIS includes blocking the use of WebDAV (which is what you've configured) for external users, because WebDAV is full of security holes.

There are many good articles on the web on why WebDAV is bad (most of them written for IT pros :) ). Any time you increase your "surface area" you increase the risk that some malefactor will hit you with a zero day exploit, so you should consider whether the benefits outweigh the risks.

  • Thanks Ken for bursting my bubble!  :-)

Can you recommend anything to use other than WebDav to accomplish the same thing?

  • There is nothing, or at least nothing I can think of off the top of my head. Even Google uses WebDAV. :)

You have to make your own choices, but I've honestly never met anybody who actually needed WebDAV for home use. Lots who wanted that functionality because it's convenient, but nobody who, at the end of the day, could muster a strong argument for, with a hacked server "sword of Damocles" as the against.

Given Ken's response, can you tell us exactly what you want to do? It might be that Office365 / Skydrive / something else might be a better solution.

  • I have a SOHO (small office home office) business with 3 - 5 employees.  I have about 100GB of data that I need to access with the other users.  I have and use Office 365 for our daily data which gives you about 10GB of data with some pretty high costs for additional data.  Everyone is on the go so they need to be able to access the data from wherever they are.  We also use IPP quite a bit.

I also have Microsoft Live.  While I have figured out how to map it as a network drive, it's pretty slow, limited to one user, and again it's storage is limited to 25GB and my understanding is that there isn't anyway to increase it.

  • How much do you value security? Would it really matter if your server got hacked? After all, you could just nuke it and restore your data from backup, right?

Or perhaps you could put that data, which must be largely static, on a set of USB HDDs?
