Unable to remove drive -"File Exists" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm currently trying to remove a disk from my MediaSmart EX470 but having some problems doing so.

The remove drive wizards runs for a really long time, then comes up and says it couldn't complete due to some errors, which are as follows:

In the wizard it lists a whole lot of files with the simple and understandable error message - "File Exists" - which of course they do.

Looking through the logfile I find the same files each with an error looking like so:

    [10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] CreateParentDirectories: Error 112 from SendToFilter(CreateParentsCmd) on \DE\shares\Software\Programs\mircstats\check.mst
    [10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] AddShadow D:\shares\Software\Programs\mircstats\check.mst 0,8501ms
[10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] ERROR: Unable to fully process error due to a fatal error - err=3
[10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] ErrorNeedsReporting is reporting error during disk removal 3 on file D:\shares\Software\Programs\mircstats\check.mst as an error
    [10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] Info for D:\shares\Software\Programs\mircstats\check.mst
    [10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] State = Migrated NumberOfShadows = 1
    [10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] Shadow(0) Volume(de190959-3a31-415f-a0d8-709d278896ac) State(Healthy)
    [10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] CreateParentDirectories: Error 112 from SendToFilter(CreateParentsCmd) on \DE\shares\Software\Programs\mircstats\CLOUDS.JPG
    [10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] AddShadow D:\shares\Software\Programs\mircstats\CLOUDS.JPG 0,8434ms
[10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] ERROR: Unable to fully process error due to a fatal error - err=3
[10-06-2009 20:56:38 2cc] ErrorNeedsReporting is reporting error during disk removal 3 on file D:\shares\Software\Programs\mircstats\CLOUDS.JPG as an error

Now I can't really figure out where the log for each file starts and ends, but the gist of it should be in there.

I've tried searching for error 112 and err=3 with no results, so I'm hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction.

Now I've tried restarting the server, several times in fact, to no avail.

I realise I could just take each of the offending files and copy them on to my PC temporarily while I remove the drive, but we are talking about a LOT of files in many different folders, so I'm not too keen on doing this unless there is absolutely no other way.

  • I'd forgotten about the bug reporting on Connect somehow - a search quickly turned up someone who'd had the same problem, along with a solution.

The solution was to disable all folder replication - which is odd, since none of the shares with offending files in had replication turned on.

  • Could you submit a bug report on Connect, with server logs submitted using the Windows Home Server toolkit?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Did you try it, and did it work? :)

  • Yes, I turned off all folder replication and reran the remove disk wizard - it zoomed through in ten minutes and reported that it had successfully removed the drive.
