Mesh thinks XLS file is updated, but it is not RRS feed

  • Question

  • Something I have noticed lately, if I open an Excel file, play with it, and close it, and choose NO when asked to save. Mesh will still generate a "blah updated file.xls" even in the news feed. (not sure if it's uploaded as well or not... but the event is definitely there)

I am quite sure I selected No, when asked to save.

Why is mesh picking this up as an update? How does mesh check for updates anyhow?

  • This is a known issue on our radar.  Excel is one of a handful of programs that edits a file when it opens it, and reverts it back to the original document if nothing is changed when you exit the program.  Unfortunately, as Jamie points out, this can cause 'fake' conflicts when many users open an Excel spreadsheet at the same time across the Mesh.

Yeah its annoying isn't it? Actually, Mesh isn't doing anything wrong. When you open up an .xls Excel will automatically commit a save. I don't know why, it just does. Mesh correctly identifies that as an update.

This created huge problems for me when I was sharig such a file with someone else. It was creating conflicts even when all i was doing was opening the file to take a look at it - we were really confused as to what was going on.

    Anyway...Excel is the culprit.

  • did it used to (prior to July 11) do that? I never paid much attention to news feed before. I only started paying attention since the new "convalescing" upgrade in the last update.
But yeah, that is indeed an annoyance...
I took a closer look at the Excel behaviour since your post: let's say the file was updated at 8am, now is 10pm. If I open the file, the modified datestamp immediately change to 10pm (I am guessing this is the event mesh saw?) When I close, and decline to save, the datestamp reverts to 8am.

Question/Wish list  for Devs: Is there a way to make mesh check for update only after the application is closed (i.e. after Excel reverts it back to the unchanged 8am version) or when user manually commits a save?
