OEM-installed Win7 Home Premium just started failing WGA after a little over a year in service RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is a Gateway/Acer DX4831.  It was first turned on April 25th, 2010.  Not sure that it makes any difference, but the product key on the side of the case doesn't match the one that WGADiag reports.
    Here's my WGADiag result:

As I suspected, you have a problem (probably in the registry) with the Software Protection service (sppsvc)
please open a Command Prompt window and enter the following commands

    SC QPRIVS SPPSVC
    SC QUERYEX SPPSVC
    and
    SC SDSHOW SPPSVC

Copy and paste the results to your response.

Your problem appears to be caused by the fact that the Software Protection Service has not started - it need to run all the time in Win6.x

    Please try the following...

    Click on the Start button
    In the Search box, type
    SERVICES.MSC
    and hit the Enter key
Accept the UAC prompt, if you get one, and the Services Console will appear.
Look down the list for the Software Protection Service
right-click on it, and select Properties
In the Startup type  section, it should say 'Automatic(delayed start)'  - If not, then set it that way, and click Apply
Select the Start button to attempt to start the service - what happens?
If the service fails to start, what is the EXACT error message?

If it's failed to start, please try the following also (it may provide a more informative error message)....
    1) Click Start button.
        2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
        3) Right-Click on the found file  CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt if you get one
        4) Type: net start sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    What error do you get?

Reboot - allow a few minutes for the system to settle down, and run a new MGADiag report, and post the result here.

  • Yeah, I was just digging around in the event log and found:

The Software Protection service terminated with the following error:

The system cannot find the file specified.

When I try to start the service manually, it fails immediately with the same error message. Is there any more detailed log I can look for to see which file it's looking for? :)

    I was running

    sfc /scannow

while typing this, and it just finished with no integrity violations.

  • C:\Windows\system32>net start sppsvc
The Software Protection service is starting.
The Software Protection service could not be started.

    A system error has occurred.

    System error 2 has occurred.

The system cannot find the file specified.

Have you been using any kind of Registry Cleaner? - this type of error is usually caused (in Vista, at least) by a registry error resulting from misuse of such a beast.
If that's the case, then use the option to Undo any changes, and see if that helps.

Otherwise, try a System restore back to a time the error wasn't showing.

  • Also, you used an outdated version of the MGADiag to create the Diagnostic Report. you are using version(1.9.0019.0) but the current version is (1.9.0027.0).

You may want to download the current version and run a new report and post it here.  It may provide additional information.

The most current version of the MGADiag.exe tool can always be found here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

    Thank you,

As I suspected, you have a problem (probably in the registry) with the Software Protection service (sppsvc)
please open a Command Prompt window and enter the following commands

    SC QPRIVS SPPSVC
    SC QUERYEX SPPSVC
    and
    SC SDSHOW SPPSVC

Copy and paste the results to your response.
