windows vista product key on bottom of laptop has worn away and I can no longer read it.

Reinstall using the Manufacturer's Recovery media - you won't need the Key then.

unfortunately, the box, cd, code on bottom is rubbed invisible, no traces of code.

Your only option now is to purchase and perform a "clean install" of either Windows 7 or Windows 10.

As I said before - if you use the manufacturer's Recovery media you will not need any Key at all.
