XP clean install new OEM media old PK RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am in the middle of a necessary XP pro clean install.  I cannot get online with that laptop.  I am using a new unused holographed MS OEM cd.  I have lost the previous one purchased on a WGA program.  My legal product key for the WGA version will not work with the OEM version.  What are my options?

  • I suggest reinstalling with genuine CD Media rather than using the update utility - as non-genuine software typically has malware and other open holes attached with it :(

  • Ah!

Well, there are various restrictions on the installation CD's. Such as you have to use an OEM Product key with an OEM CD. A Retail Product Key with a Retail CD.

WGA counts as retail currently. You'll have to find retail CD media (and you can order replacement CD's here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246) instead of just purchasing another kit (Not recommended!)

  • I paid for the liscence and the media - and lost the media.  Do I have to bite the bullet and pay my $125 a second time.  I am on a limited budget.  Are there options?  With my legal serial number and product key - how can I finish my clean install, underway?

  • I visited http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246 at MS and got the phone number (800) 248-0655.  They shipped me the new media in a few minutes.  I did have my legal product key for them to verify.  I have spent a month on and off, trying to find a replacement disk.  I got the answer pretty promptly from the forum.
