  • If you cannot successfully activate Windows XP via the internet, then choose the alternative option to "activate by phone".

How to activate Windows XP by phone:

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click 'Start', point to 'All Programs', point to 'Accessories', point to 'System Tools', and then click 'Activate Windows'.
      Or,
click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area (aka system Tray).
      Or,
clicking Start button, then Run, and type in "oobe/msoobe /a", then press the Enter key located on your keyboard.

    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.

    3. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.

    4. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
"You have successfully activated your copy of Windows".

  • Your MGA report shows an installation of Windows XP Professional using a OEM CD.  If you wish to use a Volume License product key, then you'll have to create a new image using the Volume License installaion CD and install it.  You cannot use a Volume License product key with a computer manufacturer's customized Windows XP OEM CD.

  • The problem here is it's a new laptop from the vendor with XP preinstalled, just like the other laptops that work.

    Any assistance would be appreciated

  • Stephen O,

What response or error message are you seeing if any?

Please clarify what you mean by "we ran in to a failure to activate"?

Computer manufacturers who have a royalty agreement with Microsoft are issued special Product Keys that are embedded into the installation routines on special Windows installation CDs that use System Lock Preinstall (SLP) technology.  The specific installation reported in the mgadiag report you posted is such an installation.  It is certainly NOT a Volume Licensing installation of XP.  If this installation is not Activating, you need to work with the manufacturer.

WGA technology only enters into the picture only AFTER a given installation of XP is activated.  Until then, WGA is immaterial to the problem you are seeing.

The message, and icon in the tray, "This copy of Windows is not activated".  Went through standard setup. turn machine on and wait for install to happen.  During the process we were not connected to the internet.  When prompted to register we select not at this time.

Have NOT been able to activate several laptops even though they were from the same shipment, while several other activated fine...  somewhat frustrating.

There is NO option in system tools to activate this copy of windows.
