Why do I get prompted to install dual boot recovery cd RRS feed

  • Question

  • I wanted to try out the recovery cd so I went to the software folder on my WHS. I was prompted to go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=104683

When I go there I download the restorecd.msi. I run the MSI and it wants to install the dual boot recovery cd on my machine. This gave me pause because I'm not sure why I need to install the recovery CD just to burn a recovery CD.

Could someone give me a brief fairly simple explanation as to why the recovery CD download needs to install something on my computer? I was expecting a simple iso file that i could use to burn a CD

    Thanks

  • You need to "install" it to unpack it. Then you'll burn the disk image (.iso) you'll get to a CD, using your software of choice.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks Ken, I did that and I burned the CD, I'll test it out later.

But as I suspected when I go to add remove programs on my computer there is a listing for "Windows Home Server Home Computer Restore CD (Dual Boot).  It seems like it would have been easier just giving me a link to an ISO rather than having me install something into my computer just to burn the image onto a CD.

Is the restore CD possibly tailored to the specific machine that I use to burn it?

    Thanks
