Product Key ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I just bought the " One Care" software from best buy, as I was installing the software on my laptop I kept contiously getting an error.

When I was  trying to enter  my product key but, the system was generating me an error message  dipsplaying that my "product key was incorrect".

But I can assure i entered the product key  many, many times and correctly ....

Is there any other solution ?

    Please advise

    Need help please

  • Are you using the 25 character key found on an orange sticker stuck to a card insode the box?

If so, there are some characters like '1' and 'J' or '0' and 'O' or 'Q' that are difficult to tell apart. Some recommend using a magnifying glass, though I'd probably just try the other letter combinations if only a couple are difficult to read.

If neither of these help, it's possbile you got a 'bad' key, though it's rare. In this case you'll need to go to OneCare Support for help. Respond if you need that information.

I'm moving your post to the Install and Activation forum, since it's not at all Off Topic.

If you are getting an error about the key being invalid, you are mistaking at least one character or you have a misprinted key. The latter is very rare, though it can happen.

I hate the font that they use for the key - some characters are miserable to discern. J and I look all too much alike, as do O and 0.

I recommend that you use a magnifying glass to check the characters closely - I find that I need to do this. If you are still encountering a problem with activation, you have about 2 weeks to get activated, so I'd go ahead and open an email request to support, explaining the problem. See the FAQ and use the Trial user option to start the email request. If you can provide a digital image - scan or photo - of the key to the tech that responds, they can validate the key for you.

I'm having the same issue as the person with the original post and I've tried reaching support via your link above but to access this support, it's requesting a 20 product ID number.  I'm confused because my product key is a 25 character key

My previous reply contains the instructions for how to reach support via email as a trial user.

Unofficial path - send me an email at sboots@mvps.org with a subject line including "OneCare" (to get past my spam filtering) and in the message body, tell me what country you are in, your forum nickname, and paste this link:

    http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=4214992&SiteID=2

I am not online 24x7, so you may be waiting for a reply, but I'll do my best to hook you up with support.

Note that you certainly don't need to reinstall if your problem is simply that OneCare is reporting that your key is not valid during the activation process. Leave it in trial mode until you get it resolved. Support can validate your key for you.

I hate that support path. The ID it is asking for can be found in help/About in OneCare, but is useless to you since your OneCare is not activated.

Use the trial user path for email support to bypass the validation.
