windows xp repair

Question
-
I have been working on a dimension 2400 for a friend. It was completely infested and after spending all day on it and still being unable to make it work reasonably well decided to try to repair the xp installation. They had no disc as it was a second hand system to them. There is no COA on the box so I used spotmau to recover the product key. I had an old xp home cd so I tried to do a repair of the installed xp home but it will not accept the product key. What options do I have at this point?Tuesday, September 4, 2012 12:24 AM

That will almost certainly require a repair install and re-activation to work properly - which effectively puts you back in the same state you started.

If there is no COA sticker on the case, then it's likely that the installation is a Retail one, or a counterfeit.
Is your disk a Retail on, an OEM System Builder one, or a branded OEM one?

The disc has the hologram and says" for distribution with a new PC only. Includes service pack 2" I do not see anything about OEM.Tuesday, September 4, 2012 10:01 AM

That means that it's an OEM disk.
If the system is still functional at all, what is the Product ID showing on the System Properties window?

Please delete the KEY you found - or it will be stolen and eventually blocked.

Got frustrated and put another hard drive in with a OS that was from my old PC. I appreciate the help. I am learning as I go and know enough to help people with most problems. There are a lot of places that like to take advantage of people so I try to help when I can.
