Best upgrade path? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I hope someone can give me the best option in regards to the certifications that I have already acquired. The cerification landscape has changed so much since I last took an active part in it that I'm a bit confused. I am MCDST, MCSA, MSCE 2003 Security certified. After that I did the 70-649 to upgrade to MCITP 2008, did not complete the entire upgrade path then though. And I did the 70-410 Server 2012 installing and configuring exam.

What is the best route for me to take to get my certifications up te date? The certification planner seems to be down so I cant check what MS suggest there at the moment.

  • Hi, avanerven.

It sounds like you are pretty sharp and experienced professional because you have passed a lot of different exams over the years. It just seems that you need to do a little planning to earn one or more certification titles. I suggest you pass the following four (4) exams to complete your certification path to MCSE: Windows Infrastructure: 70-646, 70-417, 70-413, and 70-414. Details below.

You were not specific about what exact certification you were working towards. I can only guess your goal based on your passed exams. As well, I am calculating the least number of exams you need to pass to earn a MCSE 2012 certification based on your exam history.

Already passed exam, 70-649 details: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/exam.aspx?ID=70-649

The 70-649 exam represents three Windows 2008 exams: 70-640, 70-642, and 70-643. Passing it gave you the three (3) related MCTS certification titles for these exams as well:

    • MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Configuration
    • MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure Configuration
    • MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Application Platform Configuration

1.) 70-646. Since you already earned the MCSE Security 2003 and you have also passed 70-649, you are just one exam away from earning two (2) more certification titles! You should pass exam 70-646 next. By passing 70-646, you will earn the certifications MCITP: Server Administrator 2008 and MCSA: Windows Server 2008.

MCITP: Server Administrator 2008 details: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/windows-server-certification.aspx#item-ID0EDAAAACBAMCSA
    MCSA: Windows Server 2008
    details: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/mcsa-windows-server-2008-certification.aspx
    Exam 70-646 details: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/exam-70-646.aspx

2.) 70-417. Once you earn the MCSA: Windows Server 2008, you can upgrade to MCSA: Windows Server 2012 with just one more exam, 70-417.

    Exam 70-417 Details: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/exam-70-417.aspx

DECISION: After passing the two exams above, you get to choose from six (6) available MCSE certifications. Whichever one you choose will require you to take two (2) related exams to earn a MCSE title. For steps 3 and 4 (below), I assumed you wanted to go for MCSE: Server Infrastructure but I could be wrong; it is your choice.
Here are the six (6) MCSE titles. Do not count the two (2) SQL Server MCSE titles (Data Platform and Business intelligence): http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/mcse-certification.aspx

    3.) 70-413. You will need to pass 70-413 and 70-414 (Step 4).

    Exam 70-413 details: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/exam-70-413.aspx

4.) 70-414. Passing this would give you a MCSE: Server Infrastructure certification.

    Exam 70-414 details: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/exam-70-414.aspx

By the way - the MCP Certification Planner may work for you if you view it using a different web browser than what you normally use to check your Outlook/Hotmail/Live email account. Try Firefox, Chrome, or IE.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks a lot Davin for your extensive reply! I will go for the path you suggested and when I'm done with the first part I will figure out which route to take for MCSE.
