Vista not genuine??? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi There,

Tried restarting the licensing service but did not do the job.  Machine is a Toshiba Satellite laptop, with I am sure the OEM version of Vista on it.  Problem is that the label is mostly rubbed off the bottom, so no way to double check the the license code.  Toshibal L305-S5899

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.  I have this machine in order to get the spyware off (in progress) but noticed the "not genuine" tag in the lower right hand corner and would like to remedy for customer...

  • Hello captelcom,

The diagnostic Report suggests there may be a problem with Vista's Licensing Store (likely either the file is corrupt or it's licensing data is messed up in some way). Please try the below steps to recreate the Store file and it's data:

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or re-Activate. Be sure to use the Product Key listed on the sticker located on the side, bottom or (for some laptops) in the battery compartment of the PC.  To activate, please use the By Phone method.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS
