  • Hi Nick,

Here is a URL that you can attempt to connect to https://svc.sharedview.com/client-config.txt .  Also, you could try enabling Automatically detect settings.  Another thing that you could try is signing in to your LiveID through a different mechanism.  Thanks.

  • Hello Nick,

Could you please give us a little more information to help troubleshoot this issue?  Which OS and default web browser are you using?  Is your web browser set to automatically detect settings (in IE it's under Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings)?  Thanks.

  • Hi Nick,

Were you able to connect to the .txt KristianJ provided?  Let us know if you continue to encounter problems, and we'll continue to work through it.

Thanks for trying SharedView and visiting the forums!

  • I've tried to sign in about 20 times over the last week or so and everytime I get:

    Cannot Contact SharedView

Unable to contact the SharedView Service.

    Please try again later.

My browser and settings are the same as Nick's except that I use port 80.

I did not have Automatically detect settings checked but I've done that and it didn't change a thing.

I also hit the URL you gave Nick and was able to view the page.

I'm anxious to test drive SharedView and look forward to working through this problem with you.

  • Randy,

thank you for your feedback. Can you please include the the last 30 lines of the log file as Nick had done above? Also, are you able to sign into other sites using the same Windows Live ID?

    Thanks

  • Hi Randy,

To view the log file for the SharedView client please choose Start > Run > type "%temp%" and then ENTER, then look for a file named like sharedview-debug40.txt.  Thanks.

  • Hi Randy,

Could you try signing in to your LiveID through a different mechanism (like Live Messenger or Hotmail/Live Mail)?  Also, which OS and browser are you using?  Thanks.

    Friday, July 6, 2007 7:44 PM
  • I log into MSN with my LiveID and am using XPSP2 and IE7.

  • Randy,

Another item that you could try is the following (from the Live Messenger support using the 80048883 error listed in your log file as a search input):

"Confirm the date and time settings

You may not be able to sign in because of a problem with your date and time settings. To troubleshoot the problem:
    1. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Type control timedate.cpl, and then click OK.Type control timedate.cpl, and then click OK.
    3. In the Date and Time Properties dialog box, confirm that the date and time settings on your computer are correct, and then click OK.In the Date and Time Properties dialog box, confirm that the date and time settings on your computer are correct, and then click OK."

(source http://help.live.com/help.aspx?project=Messengerw11&market=en-us&querytype=topic&query=&tmt=&domain=support.live.com&format=a2 using the "80048883" query string).

SharedView uses the Live service for authentication so this might apply in your case.  Please let us know the outcome.  Thanks.

  • Hi,

we can use SharedView fine from host on plain internet connection or VPN.

Only on one customer site with a proxy, it fails with the same error reported by other users.

PC time is correct. We can download the .txt file.

But...everything works if we connect with Live Messenger first, then use SharedView.

We still have to logon to SharedView. Can then shutdown Live Messenger and SharedView continues to work.

Unfortunately for us, we cant download Live Messenger onto customer PC first so cant use SharedView. This is a shame as it's way faster and more reliable than for example Symantec pcAnywhere.

We can provide more info privately to MS if there's a possibility to fix this - customer is a global blue chip organization.

  • Confirming date and time settings had no effect.

    Thursday, August 2, 2007 7:52 PM
  • I did some research on the error code returned (0x80048883), the error is when Passport thinks that you are not connected to the internet.  You said you were able to sign into Live Messenger and Hotmail.  Did you provide any exceptions for those programs in your firewall?  Did you do the same for SharedView?  Some people said that they resolved the problem by launching the program a different way, assuming that you are launching from the desktop, can you launch SharedView from it's installation directory, and also try launching via cmd window.

  • Also, can you get into a sharedView session as a guest user?  To do this, find someone who can run sharedView, start the app without signing in and join their session using the session name and password.

If you are able to join a session, then the problem must be the SharedView client communicating with the Passport service.  We can find out exactly what port needs to be unblocked to allow this, although its strange that WinLIve ID still works.

Also, I'd like to take a look at the client config file on your system.  Its located in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SharedView\Connection\LastClientConfig.  Its a big long multistring.  If you aren't comfortable posting it, send it to Ginger.

Thanks for helping us test SharedView!

  • I posted a workaround for this problem.

    http://forums.microsoft.com/SharedViewBeta/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2021725&SiteID=59

However, if you do not want to install messenger or disable content filter temporarily, there is a third thing you can do, which is to sign into messenger on one computer, which downloads the ppcrlconfig.dll to either

    On Windows XP

    \Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\Production    OR

    \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\Production

    On Vista

    \ProgramData\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\production

Once you have this file, you can distribute to other machines that you have installed SharedView on.

  • Thank you, David. The problem has been fixed by your way.
