Backup fails unable to create volume snapshot 0% 0x8004230F RRS feed

  • Question

  • Backups failing at 0%.  Two dell D630 laptops, one 750 optiplex.    All were installed from acronis images and we used acronis backup prior to WHS installation.  All had acronis removed from Add/Remove Programs.  Dell T105 2003 sbs server backups  are complete.

    Connector works fine.

Will not backup manual or auto.

On the test system,  a spare laptop (dell D630) , I followed the manual removal process for acronis.

Console says backup failed.  Failed to take snapshot of the volume for backup.

Only C: is selected for backup.  Dell sys partiton (D) is not.

    Chkdsk finds no errors.

System Restore successfully created a restore point, and has points in history.

NTbackup using volume shadow copy fails.  File based backup to \\whs\users\username works.

    Backup Status

    Operation: Backup

COM+ objects in components could not be opened.  Ran COM+ rebuild according to KB315296.  Successfully rebuilt com+ catalog.  Reinstalled WHS connector.  No luck.

    Tried KB941956.  No Help.

Logged in user is local admin.

Free space is not an issue on client or server.

    Disabled A/V. Trend Micro.

Disabled System Restore on the D: (dell recovery partition)

    Still no joy.

    I am out of ideas.

Due to complexity of machines, I do not want to do a reinstall.     I also have 2 more servers to install and 10+ more PCs to do.  All were Acronis setups.  I need a fix for this beyond xp reinstall or repair.  One of the other computers had an XP reinstall over just prior to WHS install and that machine has same issues.

    Thank you,

    Ken Leach

I would try using the Acronis clean up utility on the clients. More than likely, there are left over Acronis bits that are interfering with VSS.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Lara,

Acronis clean up utility failed to solve the problem.

Prior to posting, I had followed the manual uninstall guidelines, just so I could see where the changes were made.

The clean up tool did not help the machine where I had performed the manual uninstall or those I had not.

    VSS service is running.
    SwPrv is not.

vssadmin list shadows fails with an error.  list providers and list writers looks clean.

The SwPrv service is using C:\windows\system32\dllhost.exe /processid:{CLSID####} as the path to the executable.  What id should it be pointing at?  I could find no reference in the registry to that id other than the control set services SwPrv listings.

    What should it match?

    Next?

    THANK YOU!
