TiVo Publisher for WHS Add-In RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I have developed an add-in which serves your WHS media shares to your networked TiVos.

You can download the software here http://durfee.net/software/

The web site contains installation instructions and some basic information.

You will need to manually open UDP port 2190 (for the TiVo Beacon), in addition to the port that TiVo/WHS uses, which is 6103 TCP by default.

If you have any feedback, suggestions, or questions, please let me know!

    Thanks!

  • Rob,

This add-in is just what I was looking for to serve my Tivos. I followed your instructions and I have installed the add-in from the console but am unable to see the icon for the Tivo Publisher tab in WHS. I have even shutdown and restarted the WHS server but still do not see the tab.
I do have 2 other add-ins installed with their icons and tabs ( Whiilst and WOL ).

Is there something that I'm missing.

I'm anxious to set this up and try it on my Tivos.

  • Hi Larry,

Check the Event Log to see if there is an error message for TivoPublisherForWHS.

(The Event Viewer is in the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel.)

In the C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server folder, do you should see TiVoPublisherForWHS.exe and HomeServerConsoleTab.TiVoPublisherAddIn.dll?

    Rob

  • Thanks for the quick response. The event viewer show a successful installation and both of the files are in the C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server folder.

I'm tempted to unisntall one or both of the other 2 add-ins to see if they are creating the conflict.

  • There was a bug in the application that I obviously didn't catch.

I have uploaded a new version of the add-in installer to the website.

    Sorry for the inconvenience!

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • Thanks for the quick update. I have removed the old version and installed the new and can now see the TiVo Publisher for WHS tab. I have gone into settings and started, stopped and restarted the service.

I am not able to see either of my 2 Tivos under the clients.

I can see that the Tivo services is started on the server.

Any ideas on what I 'm missing?

  • If you go to the TiVo tab, and click the Query Server button, does it give you a (badly formatted) version message?

If that works, then the Service is working, but for some reason it’s not receiving beacons from the TiVos.

Do you have the TiVo Desktop installed? If so, you need to disable the TiVo Beacon service.

  • Durfman,

I don't own a Tivo yet, but it may be a better all around choice vs buying a Dlink Media Player.

Could you put some FAQ's together or some links that may provide more info on:

    • Tivo Desktop, what it does if it's needed for your add-in
    • What video files are supported....mpeg, avi, xvid, divix etc,
    • Which Version 2 boxes this works with.
    • Anything else that may help the Tivo noob determine if Tivo is the way to go to stream vid, pics, and music to their TV's and use your add-in.
    Thanks.

  • Installed smoothly and runs perfectly,

    Thanks!

  • I'm working with Rob directly to see about HD Photo support for the Series 3.  He's got the brains for the add-in and I've got the S3.  Hopefully we can make something happen.  Right now the add-in works on the S3 but it's the same 4:3 display for the photos as you get with the TiVo Desktop without HD Photo support.

  • Thank you for creating this add-in. The music & photo sharing works great on my Series 2 DTivo(DirecTV Tivo). Unfortunantly, because it's an DTivo, it does not have HMO--so I can't stream videos to my DTivo with this add-in. Do you know of any work-arounds which may allow this add-in to stream videos to an DTivo?

    Thanks,

    Brian

  • I am having issue with my TiVo v.2 and this app.

When I go to Videos on Windows Home Server, after 30-40sec of (I assume) searching it tells me that there are no videos in this folder.  In the shared folder I have several .WMV's as well as other folders which contain several other formats including .VOB, .AVI, MPG.

Along with the note telling me that there are no Video files it tells me to press the left arrow button to go back to the main menu, when I do that the Add-in on the WHS fails and I have to stop and restart the service.

Symptoms of the Add-in failing are that I can no longer see the tabs for Photos or Music on the TiVo and on the WHS console I do not see any devices.

I have set up the suggested Cache folders, could this lead to my problem?  If not, any suggestions?

    Thanks

  • I would turn off the use video metadata option and see if that helps. If it does, then something is wrong when it tries to create the xml files.

Also, if you go to the console and click on the Log button, the view should switch to the log view and you can see if there are any errors. If you e-mail me the log file, I will look at it. The log file should be in the %temp% folder.

    Thanks!

  • I have found that the combination of JavaHMO and Tivoserver seem to work well on the WHS platform.

I am able to use the built-in sharing to play music and photos on my HR20 and the other two serve up the DirecTivos nicely.

  • Greg,

I didn't realize JavaHMO and Tivoserver would work on DTivos. Do you mind give a quick overview on your setup process?

    Thanks.

  • Everything you need is right here:

    http://www.mastersav.com/tivo_zipper.html

    http://www.weethet.nl/english/tivo_dtv2_os6hack.php

It is important to use a compatible USB Network Adapter such as this:

    http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/product1.cfm?SID=1&Product_ID=341&Category_ID=4&page=prod&type=Model&ModelID=76

Best thing to do is use an old 40-80 gig to practice with.  Took me about an hour to get it right the first time. I now have 5 SD Tivos and 1 HD Tivo hacked.  The HD Tivo can only do music and photos, but the SD Tivos can transfer video amongst themselves and bring over movies using TivoServer.

Update to my previous post and this reply.  I was able to connect after disabling and Metadata and even play a .wmv that was in the root of my Videos folder.  The struggle began when I wanted to access files that were within a folder in the VIDEOS folder.  The app was extremely slow, but did eventually start uploading the .avi, but I was not patient enough to actually get any other files uploaded after that.  Seriously I waited 5 mins for different Videos folder screen to populate.  As it turns out TiVo publisher eventually crashed and I got 2 error messages on my Server the next time I remote desktop'ed in.

Next I followed Rob's personal email instructions to add & share the Metadata folder, don't know what I had done before, but this time it worked.  Plus I stopped my Webguide service, just incase its using port 80 was messing with the TiVo publisher using port 80 (Rob - any thoughts on this?).  What this next experience showed me is that service is much faster with Metadata turned on, but the app can only go one folder deep within the VIDEOS folder and if you try to back out of a folder and go into another folder the App will continually re-load/show the files from the first folder even though the header at the top of the page says it's accessing the different folder.  The reason I feel that you can only go one folder deep is that when I tried to access a ripped DVD set of files I went into "X Movie" folder then into "VIDEOS_TS" but would repeatedly see another "VIDEO_TS" folder as if it couldn't go any farther then when I backed out it only took on press to get me to the VIDEOS list again.  Lastly if I do try to Play a file after I've gone into the first folder, backed out and into another folder the TiVo box will crash and re-boot.  Which kind of makes sense, because I'm trying to play a file that does not actually exist in that folder.  (P.S. the issues with folder structure exist even if I turn the Metadata off   and the photos functionality was fine even going more than one folder deep.)

Hopefully most of this makes sense and will be helpful....the taste of functionality I got was great.

  • I had Tivo Desktop running on my Vista Media Center (VMC) and it worked with the two series 2 TIVO units running on the network also.  So, I unistalled TIVO desktop on VMC and installed TIVO/WHS on the WHS to try it out.  The install went well and I then created the two cache shares and enabled the UDP Port 2190 as instructed.  The WHS Control Panel immediately found the two Tivo units and all looked well.  But, when I went downstairs to the TIVO unit in the Den, it did not show the WHS server at all. Tried to Add Server Manually but no luck.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Ted

P.S  Is it really UDP Port 2190?  When in Tivo/WHS and I choose propertes for each Tivo unit, it shows Port 2191

    Sunday, August 5, 2007 7:44 PM
  • Port 2190 should be correct -- it allows the WHS software to send the beacon to the TiVos and receive beacons from the TiVos.

Did you also open TCP port 6103? That is the port the TiVos will actually use communicate with the WHS service.

  • The folders problem is a bug in the latest TiVo software. For some reason when it requests a videos container (i.e., a folder), it sends two requests, one is the correct one and then a wrong one (which is what gets shown). To workaround... If you select one of the videos to see the details, and then move back out, it will display the folder's correct contents.

The reboot problem is related to the folder bug. The TiVo asks for a container with an anchor item (the current highlighted item), but it's asking for a different folder than the one the item is in. When the app sends the container contents, the item isn't in the container and the TiVo gets confused and reboots (which is not very friendly!). To workaround this problem, after I select a video to transfer, I hit the TiVo button twice to return to the Now Playing List and then go back into Videos on WHS. I'm working on trying to code around this problem.

TiVo Desktop displays all the videos as one big list, but I really want to preserve the folder structure. I hope they will fix the problem in a future update.

  • OK, I had opened 6103 as a UDP Port.  Once I changed it to TCP, it worked...sorta.  When I select Music & Photos on the TIVO, it sometimes comes up...but very slowly.  Three of the folders under server/Photos work fine.  One that has 25 or so folders in it yields an error and the connection is lost for several minutes.  I don't know enough to tell you what the bug is yet.  No Videos are shown at all.

    Monday, August 6, 2007 2:52 PM
  • You're having the same issue I had for a while, no where in the instructions does it say that your going to find the videos in the "Now Playing" list.  Not the most intuitive, but it makes sense.

  • Any idea whether this might work with other DVR systems or is only designed for TiVo?

I ask, for I have 2 Dish DVR's and didn't know if it could work with them, whether or not the service could be compat or whether there are different ports on those type of dvrs...

    Thanks!
    Wednesday, August 22, 2007 9:27 PM
  • It doesn't work with the Dish DVRs, only with the TiVo DVR. I'm not sure how photo and music sharing works on the Dish since I don't own one.

    Thanks.

  • Rob,

Does TiVo Publisher allow me to transfer recordings from my TiVos to the WHS so as to free up space on my TiVos?  Right now I'm just using TiVo Desktop on an XP machine, but the XP machine is storing the .tivo files on the WHS storage.  Ideally, I'd like to leave the XP machine out of the picture.

    Thanks.

  •

Just to let you know of my experiences with the TiVo Publisher plug in.

I downloaded the .msi and attempted to install the program.  I continually got the error that the Login or Password was not recognized.  I used "server\Administrator" as the login and the administrator password.  That allowed me to install it.  I should mention that I had created an account with admin rights that was currently logged in.  So, after that, I attempted to configure the program.  I couldn't get anything to work.  So, I uninstalled the TiVo Desktop 2.4a that was running and rebooted.  Still no luck.  After looking at the TiVo Publisher service, I noticed it was still using the .\Administrator account to try and run the add-in.  I changed the name to my .\xxxxx admin account along with the correct password and was in business.

Is there a way to program the add-in to use the Administrator group rather than the Administrator login?

Also, I have a very large music collection.  If I go to a genre and press play with the shuffle on, the system times out or locks up.  Either way, I have to drill down to lower folders to get music (.mp3's) to play.

Otherwise, a great program! Big Smile

  • I am able to access Photos on the server, however when trying to access music I am getting the following error:

An unexpected error acessing this server.

    (Error#3-5-32)

Note: Music is accessible from the network using TV Desktop on a different machine, as well as from MCE)

  • When using TiVo Publisher for WHS, I've noticed that any music folders I have that have an ampersand in the name return an error message "this folder contains no playable music" when I try to open them on the TiVo. This error does not occur when using TiVo desktop 2.3a or 2.5 to serve the same folder.

    Anyone else notice this?

Thanks for a great add-in Rob!  Otherwise having no problems with it.

I only have TiVo publisher on my WHS, I took TiVo Desktop off.  I do not see the problem you are reporting.  I believe Rob said the TiVo Desktop and TiVo Publisher might not work and play well together.  I am seeing problems with TiVo Publisher with video files in folders and reported it to Rob.

    Sunday, October 7, 2007 5:33 PM
  • Thanks for your response. Just to clarify, I'm not running Tivo Desktop and Tivo Publisher together on my WHS, just Tivo Publisher.  I was running Tivo Desktop previously, but I uninstalled it before installing Tivo Publisher.

  • Have mailed rob@durfee.net about the problem you are seeing?  He seems very responsive.

    Sunday, October 7, 2007 6:36 PM
  • Yes, I have emailed him about the problem with the & character in folder names but he has not responded.  I have upgraded from RC1 to RTM and the problem persists.  The problem occurs on both my original Series 2 and my Humax Series 2 recorders.  If I manually replace "&" with "and" in the folder name then I can see the folder contents via the TiVos.
    Saturday, October 13, 2007 2:56 PM
  • Sorry if I didn't get back to you about this. I thought I had e-mailed you. I have fixed the "&" problem and it will be in the next release. I hope to have version 1.1 released in the next couple of days. I have one more bug I am working on that appeared when my TiVos got software version 9.1.

    Thanks for your patience.

  • I have read through this thread and through the message on the developer's site but I am looking for some clarity on this utility. I have a series 3 tivo and would like to be able to stream archived DVD's to it from another system on my network. I don't want to copy the files onto the TiVo. I just want to be able to stream them. From what I understand Series 3 Tivos have limitations on the networking support but this is due to change on November 1st. Anyone know whether this will work for streaming video once the update is turned on? Also, where do I find out what video formats are supported? Since my Series 3 is hooked up to my HDTV, I am concerned about quality. What sort of streaming quality can I expect?

    Thanks!
    Brian

  • I don't believe the Series 3 boxes support video transfers of any kind at this time, but I understand it is coming soon.

The way the Series 2 boxes work currently is that it copies the video files to the TiVos. It can't stream video. (If you are low on space and copy a large video, it will delete programs to make room.) I imagine Series 3 will work the same way.

My add-in supports any format that ffmpeg supports. The TiVo Desktop Plus software supports several video formats as well. All current methods transcode to MPEG-2. A list of resolutions supported is available on TiVo's web site, but it is currently MPEG-2 video only, max resolution of 720x480. See http://customersupport.tivo.com/LaunchContent.aspx?CID=4012d160-79c3-4238-96c8-a27b323d1413

When Series 3 gets video transfers, this could possibly change.

    I hope this helps.

I have many Xvid and Divx DVD rip AVi files on WHS and looking for the best way to stream to the TV's in the home.

Looking at TVersity, Sage TV or Tivo......

Suggestion: the Add-in web site could benefit from a FAQ section. I.E. Format compatibility for video, music and pictures. Known issues. Set Up etc. Or does this really all fall back to the Tivo web site and their server software?????

    Thanks again.

  • The TiVo Publisher supports the same things the TiVo Desktop does.  (ie, .tivo files, certain .mpg, etc). But, to watch DiVX or XViD files, you need something like PyTiVo or another program that supports ffmpeg.

Thanks! That is what I needed to hear. I'll Google PyTiVo and see what I get.

  • I have never been able to get the TiVo Publisher to work with anything other than the standard files the TiVo Desktop plays.

    Monday, October 22, 2007 4:24 PM
  • I got TivoPublisher for WHS working great then ignored it for a few weeks.  I tested with downloaded divx files, which transfered and played successfulyy to a new S2DT.

This week (After the recent software updates on the Tivo) I went to actually use TivoPublisher.

I copied a 2 week old *.tivo file to my WHS from my computer.

Tivo failed with a 'transfer error' when I attempted to play it from the Tivo.

I thought.. maybe the enryption or something changed on the *.tivo files with the software update.

    I recorded Friday nights news.

I copied this file to the WHS from my computer.

Tivo failed with a transfer error when I attempted to play it from the Tivo.

I thought... Maybe the software update borked transfers in general.

I tested again with a downloaded divx *.avi file (std 300MB size for a 45 minute show)

Transfer SUCCEEDED with an immediate option to watch as it transfered or to continue browsing while it transfered.

    Ok....

I ripped a DVD with DVD Decrypter and AutoGordianKnot.

Result file was 1.8GB.avi encoded at 720x304 resolution.

I copied this file to the WHS from my computer.

Tivo gave me the message that (to paraphrase) 'This file will be added to the todo list and be transfered after the other transfers finish'

What? I had no other transfers scheduled.

I go to Now Playing on the Tivo.

    NewDivxMovie shows as available

Info on the file shows just a partial transfer of a few seconds.

I can play the file but it finishes immediatly after going to a black screen (Note: The Newfile.avi plays on the computer just fine, both on the computer and streaming from the WHS).

SO I'm perplexed... The only files I can get to play from the tivo are downloaded files.  Files that I create myself (Legally) and files that I copy from my Tivo (Legally) just won't work...

I'm not sure If I am seeing 1, or 2 problems. I'm not sure if it is caused by the Tivo software updates (because I only tested with downloaded files before the tivo update).

    Thoughts, Suggestions, etc?

  • I like this add-on.  The only item I'd like to see added is the ability for it to share WMA files.  Before WHS when I ran Tivo Desktop there was a third party program I ran on my server that, on the fly, converted my WMA files to a playable format for the Tivo's.

Plus it would be nice to have the ability to pull shows from the Tivo to WHS for storage.

  • Version 1.1 is now available for download on my web site: http://durfee.net/software

This update should see performance increases in music and photos browsing. Also, several minor bugs have been fixed, such as folders containing the "&" character.

I'm working on trying to fix the problem transferring TIVO files back.

I had thought about converting WMA files, but wasn't sure if it would be useful. I will add that to my list.

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • That's great to hear!

I think since this is a MS product, and with the improvements in WMP 11, many people are utilizing the WMA format instead of MP3.

I can't remember the name of the add-on I used with Tivo Desktop, but I found it over at the tivocommunity forums a while ago.

  • Color me a clueless 'tard... but what does this add-in enable me to do? I have it installed, and I also have TiVo Desktop installed and in-use on a different machine. What does this add-in do on my WHS machine? Does it let me point TiVo Desktop to the WHS box instead of the actual TiVo, or ...?

(Yes, I AM embarrassed that I even have to ask.)

  • It just presents the shares on the server, videos, music, photos and the like to the TiVo so can access them from the TiVo now showing dialog.

  • Ok.  This is driving me nuts.

I uninstalled version 1.0 so I could install version 1.1. Now, when I try to install version 1.1, it continuously pops up an error that says the "Login or Password does not exist" and then "...error 1603".

Even trying my previous method of installing using the "Administrator" account isn't working.

I also changed the Administrator password to ensure I was using the correct one.

    Any good ideas?

  • You need to specify your server's name before the username, like "server\Administrator".

(If your home server is not named "server", then you need to enter that instead of "server", e.g., "myserver\Administrator".)

  • Rob,

The instructions on you site I very easy to follow and understand.  Sending people there to look would be easier for both you and them.  Maybe if you put the default text in the field people would find it easier to understand.  When I reinstalled I tried my TiVo name and MAK in that dialog box the first time around.

  • For some reason, after I uninstalled ver. 1.0 and installed 1.1 it quit working.  I then went back and forth, and ver 1.0 still works, and re-installing 1.1 doesn't work.  All settings are the same, installation completes and logs me out of the connector, I have even rebooted the server.  Only ver. 1.0 will work.  My TiVo's are Directv TiVo's running ver 6.2a.  I con't do anything with video anyway, but the music and photos work in ver 1.0, but it can't even find the server in ver. 1.1.

    Any ideas?

  • Hi Rob,

Cool concept. I have the add-in installed on my WHS and have a S3 TiVo on my network. I saw the reboot issue mentioned relating to video but nothing about music. I haven't gotten to video yet. When I go into music on the TiVo and select the WHS, it shows an iTunes folder that I uploaded. However, when I try to open it to go into the music folder, it reboots the TiVo. I have tried several times but it reboots every time. What am I doing wrong?

  • I have an s3 TiVo and version 1.1 of TiVo publisher.  My music plays fine, but I don't have DRM involved and the audio files are .mp3.  I hope this helps in your search.

    Sunday, December 16, 2007 8:25 PM
  • There must be something in the iTunes folder that my add-in is sending back to the TiVo that it doesn't like. Unfortunately, when TiVo gets any data it doesn't like, it tends to reboot instead of displaying an error message. It makes testing so much fun.

Anyway, can you open this URL in a web browser:

    http://server:6103/TiVoConnect?Command=QueryContainer&Container=%2FMusic

(If your server isn't named "server", then change the url.)

The XML returned should have a URL for your iTunes folder. Something like:

    http://server:6103/TiVoConnect?Command=QueryContainer&Container=%2FMusic/iTunes

Can you open that in a browser and send me the XML data? I'd like to take a look at it and try to correct the problem so that the TiVo doesn't get confused.

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • Rob,

I've just started using the TiVo publisher primarily for playing my MP3 collection. My collection is organized by recursive subfolders (letter, artist, album, etc). If I select a top-level folder and click play (intending to play everything in subfolders below it), I get a "please wait" and nothing ever happens. The only way I can play a folder full of music is to click play directly on a folder containing MP3s. Is this a bug or expected behavior?

    Thanks,
    Josh

  • I ran into an odd issue that hopefully someone can help me with.  I got the Add-In all setup and I can see my Videos, Music & Photos but each one is presenting a unique problem.

First, I did set it up as per the author's suggestions with the cache files.

    Music:

I have my music organized with a folder for each artist and an album sub-folder.  When browsing Artists and selecting it will often tell me that no music was found even though there is music (mp3) in the folder.

    Photos:

After selecting Photos from the Home Server a thumbnail page loads and after a moment I get a TiVo error and I get kicked back out to Music, Photos and More.

    Videos:

When opening the Videos from Now Playing (that took a while to discover) I see all of my video folders with a (0) next to it.  So for example I have an Alias (0) at the top of my list.  When I open it, I see all of my Alias files.  However when I go to the next folder, for example, Battlestar Gallactica, inside that folder also are all of my Alias videos.  So all folders when opened are only showing me what is in the very first folder.

Then, if I leave Now Playing and go back to Live TV and then come back later and open my Jericho folder then all folders show me the Jericho contents.

    Ideas?

  • Durfman:

After testing the WHS for many months, I went out and bought the HP EX475, a dedicated WHS product that ships pre-loaded.  I installed the Tivo Publisher add-in and checked all the settings.  After install, I could not see the server from the TiVo.  Just for good measure, I stopped and started the service.  But still could not see it.

Almost all the answers I see here seem to relate to the WHS test version.  Is there any reason that it would not work with the HP EX75 WHS product.

Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks again for the good work.

  • Ok so I have messed around with this over and over to little avail.  I discovered that I must have followed an old link when installing this software as I found I had ver 1.0 installed.  I got all excited thinking that 1.1 was going to fix all the issues I was having.

Well, for me, 1.1 was a step back.  I still have never been able to view pictures (no change).  Some music works, some doesn't (no change) and now I have no video serving capability.  Anytime I try to access my videos on the server from the Tivo I get a long pause where nothing appears to be happening.  Then after five minutes or so I get a "working" message at which point the Tivo appears to hang up.  I let it sit like that for about 30 minutes and it never woke up.  It would not respond to any button presses.  I would get a "tone" but no action.

Oddly, if I rebooted the server that disconnect would wake up the Tivo box.

I so want this to work, but am striking out at each turn.

  • When you go to the TiVo Publisher add in Client list on WHS do both the TiVo and the server show in the list?

    Monday, December 31, 2007 6:57 PM
  • Just the TiVo box shows up, not the WHS.

Did you open the ports in the WHS firewall?

  • In the Server Remote Desktop:
    • Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall
    • Click the Exceptions tab
    • Click Add Port
    • Add the two port exceptions:
      • Name: TiVo Publisher, Port: 6103, TCP
      • Name: TiVo Beacon, Port: 2190, UDP
    • Close the Windows Firewall
    • Click Start > Log Off to close the Remote Desktop (do not shut down!)
Wednesday, January 2, 2008 3:53 AM
  • Yeah, the ports are open.

Today I removed TiVo desktop from my WHS which allowed me to successully view Photos and listen to all of my Music, but, would not work properly for Video.  Again, this was TiVo Desktop installed directly on the Server.

I reinstalled the Add-In ver 1.1 and rebooted the server.  Now my videos are back, with the folder bug, but now I know the workaround.  But now I have no Music and no Photos.

When trying to access my music files (all .mp3) I now get the error message "Error#3-5-32".  I have not yet looked up this error code, but I will tomorrow.  This error occurs immediately after selecting Music.

When trying to access my photos I get another error.  This time "Error#5-32".  Which is different as before I was getting error #65535.  This error occurs after selecting Photos.  I get a brief thumbnail screen with 12 black boxes and then the error occurs.

  • Does the Tivo Publisher WHS add-in allow for the transferring of recordings from the Tivo to the WHS?

If so, can this be an automatic process when the Tivo is running out of space, or do you have to manually trigger a transfer somehow?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm only considering buying my first Tivo to use with WHS.

    Thanks.

No it does not, it just publishes music, photos, and video shares to the TiVo.

No, but you can use TiVo Desktop on another computer to transfer a series to a folder in the video share on the sever.  I tried TiVo Desktop on WHS and found it to be problematic.

No, it is not a stupid question, if you can before leaping of a cliff it is prudent to do so.

  • I've been trying your add-in on HP's Mediasmart Server implementation of WHS. I have had no problem transferring videos to the Tivos (I have 2 series 2 Tivos.)  Attempting to view photos gives me a consistent error "(Error#5-32)" when selecting the option (after a short "Please wait" interval.)  Music was working fine for awhile, Today I tried it and almost immediately after selecting the option, my Tivo rebooted, I tried this a couple of times and it consistently rebooted the Tivo. I examined the files in the root of the Music share and aside from 2 directory entries there was a 'tmp' file that had 0 bytes. I don't know how the file got in the directory -- perhaps something WHS did in managing the share. Perhaps something Tivo Publisher did -- who knows.  But I deleted the file and tried the Tivo again. This time no problem.

(follow-up as of the next morning)

The 0 byte 'tmp' file is back in the root of the Music share. So it is being put there programmatically by some process.

    (follow-up as of Sunday)

Moved all the image files out of the root of the Photos share into a folder within the root(now there are only folders in the root of the Photos share).  I can now browse Photos from Tivo.  There were a couple image files that were in the root that started with '#'' that I am guessing were causing the problem. I could check it out and will soon  but there is a relaxing Corinne Bailey Rae album playing right now and I can't bring myself to stop it and go looking for trouble.

Regarding music, I did notice that I had to browse all the way to a specific track before pressing play. Otherwise I would get a "Please Wait" message that would go no further. Pressing the Tivo button would bring Tivo back to the top level menu so I could recover. For example, my music is organized by Artist/Album. I could not just navigate to the Corinne Bailey Rae folder and press play. Nor could I navigate down to the one album folder in the Corrine Bailey Rae folder and press play. I had to navigate into the album folder to the file level and press play. Then the entire album would be played.

  • I've noticed a couple of problems when watching HD (x264) content via TiVo Publisher on my HDTiVo:

    1) The video is "compressed" to 4x3.
    2) The center audio channel is omitted.

I assume that maybe these are just options that can be configured in ffdshow?
Is this something you are aware of?

  • Rob, thanks for the update. I just plugged it in and began testing it. I tried pressing play on an artist folder and things looked good -- it had the right song count and was playing the 1st track. But upon completing the first track it went back to the artist folder instead of playing the next track.  I tried it on a few different artist folders -- some with multiple albums, some with just one album and some with just a couple of song tracks immediately down from the artist folder and it behaved the same way under all circumstances.

  • Brian,

I have fixed this bug and updated the download to version 1.21. It was actually playing the last file and then stopping.

Unfortunately, while testing I discovered that I forgot to exclude a WHS DLL file (qsmif.dll) when I updated the 1.2 installer and the uninstall routine removes it when you uninstall my add-in. (The symptoms will be that a couple of the tabs will be missing and if you go into Settings/Add-Ins, the list will be empty.)

If you uninstall the add-in, you can get a copy of the DLL here:

    http://durfee.net/software/downloads/qsmif.zip

Unzip the file into the C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server folder.

I really do apologize for the bug and am sorry for the inconvenience!

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • Rob - great job and the feature I was looking for has materialized - playing WMAs!!  Thanks.

Ok, I am having a problem with creating a playlist and storing it on the server to be played by TIVO.  TIVO can see the playlist in my MUSIC on the server.  but when I press play, it shows the song but it just sits on 0 and never advances.  I tried both a WPL and a M3U playlist format but no go.

Anyone else having this issue?  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again for a super product...now just one more hurdle to get over!

  • Can you open one of the playlists with Notepad and look at the file paths?

One other guy that had problems with the playlists had files that pointed to a drive like this:

    E:\Folder\Something.mp3

That drive obviously doesn't exist on the server, but was on his desktop PC.

He changed them to relative paths like this and it worked:

    ..\Folder\Something.mp3

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • Hi Rob, I see that version 1.2 supports WMA audio files.  Any change you'll be supporting FLAC audio files in the near future?
    Saturday, February 2, 2008 2:33 AM
  •

    Rob,

    You are right!

I looked at my playlist and actually it had the exact path of the files: \\HPSEVER\Music\blah\blah.wma  and I changed it to: .\blah\blah.wma since the playlist was in the same main folder with the album folders and it worked fine!

Thanks again for a great add-in.  Now back to ripping and creating playlists of all my music so I can listen to it from my Tivo in the comfort of my family room.

  • Hi,

I recently got the HP 475 and installed the Tivo Publisher 1.21 today. I tried to play back some video files (from a Sony SR100 camcorder) with mixed results. The files show up fine in the "Now Playing" menu in my Tivo. The video even starts playing, but it seems to do so in 'fast-forward', i.e., the video is running at much higher than the normal speed. The audio is either absent or comes in bursts.  The video quality itself looks fine. I have a S3 Tivo (the original version).

Another issue is that the add-in seems to think that the TV is 4:3 when in fact it is a 16:9 tv. I can double click on the tivo client in the WHS console and select the 16:9 option in the Encoder Overrides, but there is no way to save those settings.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks a lot!

  • Rob:

Overall, I have to say this is a wonderful add-in.  I had 1.1 installed and it worked great, although I will admit I was one of the voices asking for WMA playback.

I installed 1.2 as soon as available, and sure enough it worked.  When I saw that 1.21 came out, I removed 1.2.  Unfortunately, I read your warning about the dll too late and had to download the copy from your site.  Once 1.21 was in place, I tried - and failed - to play back WMA files (a vast majority of my music collection is in WMA format).  My TiVo HD does not like the new version and acts strange whenever I try to play music, regardless of format.  On a Series 2 I have, I can play MP3s, but WMA files now do the same thing on both TiVos:  they refuse to play.  They show all the metadata, they just will not produce sound.  This is true whether I try to play the entire album from the top level or an individual song...

Any ideas what could be causing this?  Has anyone else reported this?

    Thanks,

    - Mark

  • Rob

I am seeing an odd behavior with the Video portion. The application seems to cache the file list of the first directory I enter, and present it from that point forward no matter which folder I move to.

    • On a Tivo HD,
    • I go to 'now playing'
    • select the WHS with the TiVo Publisher
    • See a directory for each directory in the 'Video Folder'
    • Each Directory has the correct count of files that are in each
    • I go into DIRECTORY1
    • I see a list of the 8 files that are in there
    • I can transfer them, and play
    Now the issue;
    • I go to DIRECTORY2
    • I see the files that are in DIRECTORY1
    • I go to DIRECTORY3
    • I see the files that are in DIRECTORY1
    • I wait a 'long time' (hours?)
    • I go to DIRECTORY2
    • I see the files that are in DIRECTORY2
    • I go to DIRECTORY1
    • I see the files that are in DIRECTORY2

    and so on.

    any thoughts?

  • TiVo Publisher Version 1.3 is now available for download here. This update adds the following features:

    • FLAC, OGG, M4A (AAC unprotected) audio formats are now supported.
    • Updated ffmpeg to newer release (2/5/2008, r11870).
    • TagLib# library is now used to read audio file tags.
    • Additional Video Metadata fields are now viewable on the TiVo (e.g., year, cast, ratings).
    • Updated the Video Metadata Editor to support additional fields and added Search (using thetvdb.com, movie-xml.com, or Amazon). (See the previous post regarding the WHS data bug.)
    • Re-arranged a few of the items in the Settings window.
    • Added Audio Bitrate slider to the transcode settings.
    • Better support for TiVo Series3/HD hardware.
    • If a video transcoding error occurs (i.e., ffmpeg encodes no data), an error image is sent instead to notify that there was a problem

The following bugs are also fixed:

    • Video Aspect Ratios are preserved.
    • Encrypted TIVO files now transfer back correctly.
    • Video folders work properly (1 subfolder down).
    • Music shuffle now works properly.
    • Playlists now ignore missing files instead of stopping.

How do I enable the Advanced... photo link?  I'd really like to use the HD photo applet.

I've already installed Java on the WHS and copied the HME files.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>java -version
    java version "1.6.0_05"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_05-b13)

  • I thought I had this add in working, because I can stream music and photos on my TiVo HD with no problem, But when I try to transfer a short video (divx, AVI) sitting in my video folder on the WHS, the video never transfers, and I see these error messages in the TiVo Publisher log:

System.Net.HttpListenerException: The specified network name is no longer available
       at System.Net.HttpResponseStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 size)
       at TivoPublisherForWHS.ffmpeg.OutputToStream(String filename, Stream outputStream)

    Any ideas where to begin?

  • That error indicates that the TiVo has dropped the connection. It is the same error that used to occur when transferring .TiVo files. I'm not sure if the problem is related to newer software versions or TiVo HD's. (I don't see the problem with the two Series 2 models I have, a 540 and a Toshiba DVD model.)

I think the fix is the same as the .TiVo file change, and I am working on that today.

Message: The TiVo Publisher for WHS service hung on starting.

Every time WHS boots when TiVo Publisher is in.  It was also causing other problems and I have since removed it.  It just was not working and caused other problems with WHS.

Actually, I made an interesting discovery yesterday. My original test transfer of a small .avi file from my MediaSmart server to my TiVo HD unit failed (dropped the connection as you mentioned). But then, I went back and put a much larger file on the server (this time, a 4GB .MPG movie, which was actually just a .VOB file I renamed with a .MPG extension). I then went to my other TiVo, which is a Series 3 unit, and started the transfer. This time, it worked. I haven't tried transferring that big MPG file to the TiVo HD yet, so I can't say if the original failure was because of the differences between the THD and the Series 3, or it was because of the file or file type. I'll try that later, though.

  • Oops, I think I spoke too soon. Both my TiVos begin the transfer with the new, larger test file...and the transfer seems to go on for a long time, but at some point, I guess the transfer must stop, and the video disappears from my "now playing" list.

I had just assumed the transfer would work, since it started and ran for a while, whereas the last time I tested it, the transfer wouldn't start at all.

  • Has anybody experienced a situation where their TiVo (in my case a HD unit) gets into a state where it refuses to play any MP3s?   It will play them fine, then for no known reason at this point, will refuse to play any MP3 files.  I have to resort to restarting the TiVo unit then all is fine again.   This issue has happened a few times now, but I can't seem to pinpoint the cause of the TiVo not wanting to play the files.  I had been playing with playlists which I found to have been wrong and need to state an indirect path instead of an absolute one.

    Thanks

  • I haven't seen that problem.  The last time my TiVo was restarted was due to a power outage, and that was several months ago.  I had to uninstall TiVo Publisher 3/27/08 due to a myriad of errors.  Things like:

Would be logged every time the server booted.  And:

among other errors attributed to TiVoPublisher according to the event logs.  I've been hoping for a new version.  For now I'm using TiVo Desktop and TiVoPlaylist on another computer pointed to the shares on WHS.

  • Does TiVo Publisher work with DirecTiVos? I've seen conflicting reports that it does or does not.

I've got two Series 2 DirecTiVos that are hacked and networked, and they work fine with TiVo's own software for music & photos (but not video), and TiVoServer and TySuiteJ work great for video. But the DirecTiVos do not see TiVo Publisher on my WHS box at all.

TiVo Publisher does appear to see them, as WHS, the 2 DirecTiVos and my WinXP box running TiVo Desktop all show up in the TiVo Publisher clients list.

I've put in the firewall exceptions, and even tried turning the firewall completely off, and that hasn't helped.

Any ideas on getting this to work? I'd love to be able to move the job of serving up music to the TiVos from my XP box to the WHS.

    Thanks.

  • Indiggio (and all)-

    Same problem here.

Periodically - read that as "more often than not" - after I select a song on the TiVo (S2), the TiVo just sits there- it's not hung, but the progress bar stays at 0:00. I can go back to the list of songs, select another (even from another directory), but any attenpt to fast forward, reverse,or skip results in a "bong" sound and nothing else.

Rebooting the TiVo usually works to free it up - but takes forever. Going to the WHS and stoping / restarting the TiVo Publisher service (within the WHS console GUI) also seems to "unstick" it.

The error messages I'm getting (extended logging on) when trying to play a song are:

"System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
       at TivoPublisherForWHS.Music.ReadTags()"

This error message repeats every few seconds while trying to play a song.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    mj

  • I have two Series 2 Tivo Dual Tuners.  I am not having any issues transfering mpg videos from whs to tivo.  I am running into the same error that others are running into when transfering (divx, AVI) files that worked great in previous versions.  Did you ever figure out why Tivo was dropping the connection for (divx, AVI) files and working for mpg files?  The error message is below and thanks for all your work on a great add in.

System.Net.HttpListenerException: The specified network name is no longer available
       at System.Net.HttpResponseStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 size)

  • Has anybody tried streaming video files from a Sony hard-disk camcorder (standard definition, not HD) to their Series 3 Tivo? I had tried with an earlier version of Tivo Publisher and it didn't work. I want to be able to copy the files from my camcorder to my WHS and then stream them to my Tivo without having to do any other manual steps (such as convert the format to Divx or something else).

    Thanks,
    Rajesh.

  • I have run into another problem - I was trying to uninstall version 1.21 in order to install 1.3, but the uninstall keeps failing with the error message,

"Exception occurred while initializing the installation: System.IO.FileNotFoundException. Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server\TivoPublisherForWHS.exe' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified."

I cannot install 1.3 without getting past this error.  Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Rajesh.

  •

I am having the same problem as an earlier poster... I have no ADVANCED link in my photos section, so I can't enable the HD Photo viewer on my Series 3 HD TiVo.

I have an ADVANCED link on my video section, but not photos.

Anyone seen this, and have a workaround?

  • I have serious problems with the product and Rob seems to have abandoned it.  Great concept though.

  • I just installed Tivo Publisher for the first time v1.3 and I too don't see the Advanced link on the photos section.

My WHS has java and I have added the three files.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the addin just to make sure.

As previous posts, anyone know of a workaround?

  • Hello,

I’m trying to get the TiVo Add-on running on my computer and every time I tell the MHS console to start the service it logs me out of the console and I have to log back in.

I’ve made the changes to the ports on both my router and the MHS computer. I’m I missing something else.

My TiVo is a series 3 if that makes any difference.

    Thanks

    Alex

  • Forget about Tivo Publisher. With all the effort needed to get it working, it is underwhelming at best.

Try Streambaby (http://code.google.com/p/streambaby/) instead. It doesn't have a WHS add-in wrapper, but it installs as a service. And it actually works quite well.
