Using Windows Home Server and Sage CRM

Question
-
I have just installed Sage CRM on my WHS and have no problems accessing the CRM software through Internet Explorer from within the LAN but I would like to make this open to the outside world so I can login from my PDA and off-site office computers.
Has anyone done this or could point me in the direction of where to find the information?
The router does not have a static IP address but on Virgin Media cable which is a very stable IP allocation.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Gareth

I would think all you would have to do is open and direct the right port in you router to the windows home server and open the port in windows firewall on the server and you should be all set accessing it from your IP address. Or windows home server domain name.

I am anxious to know what happens to your data files if someone has CRM data files open while WHS is preforming storage balancing.
I also use WHS as a file server and end up with corruption if I have files open when balancing is running. I am a programmer and use Visual FoxPro 9 w/sp2.
My server has PP1. Prior to PP1, I ran almost a year with not a single incident of corruption. I run with a single drive and no folder duplication, and still I cannot have anything open when balancing occurs.
M$ has said they do not suggest using WHS as a file server, but until PP1, it ran like a top.

I'm not sure where you got the idea you can't use it as a file server, but you definitely can. If you are getting data corruption (where you try to open a file and it doesn't open at all) and you have PP1 installed, then you should definitely file a bug report on Connect. (And yes, you can have a file open when it runs the balancing routine. It will skip any file that is open at the time. The only thing you will get is a file conflict notification if you leave a file open for more than 24 hours.)Friday, December 12, 2008 3:22 PMModerator -
Thank you for the reply.
Based on everything I read, I was under the impression that WHS was not designed to be a file server. Possibly those discussions had to do with the original corruption bug. There are posts on this forum that suggest not using WHS as a file server.
In any case, I followed your advice and filed a bug report. I would love to think that I would be able to continue using the HP as a file server. I will see if I can narrow down the exact circumstances when the problems occur.
Thanks,
DickDay

Can you give more details regarding your corruption? What happens when you try to open a file? Do you get an error message? Does it "just not work"?Saturday, December 13, 2008 4:13 AMModerator -
Here is what I said in the bug form...
I run an HP 470 as a file server with gigabit wired connection to the network. I have the latest HP updates as well as WHS PP1, the latest updates and Tookkit 1.1.
My workstations consist of a Vista Ultimate desktop w/4GB memory (my main one), an XP pro laptop w/2GB memory and a Vista Home Premium laptop w.4GB. All O/S's are up to date on patches.
I have Microsoft Visual Foxpro 9 w/sp2 installed on my local desktop drive and store projects on the WHS in 2 shared folders.
The HP server has just 1 500GB system drive and duplication is turned off.
Until PP1, I never had any issues with missing files or data corruption. I bought my HP in January 2008.
If storage balancing is occuring, and I am editing a Foxpro document (report, screen etc.) , which is stored on the server, there is a good chance that when I attempt to save my work, I will get an error stating that either the file is in use and cannot be saved, or that the memo file is invalid or missing.
All objects in Foxpro (screen, reports etc.) are really tables consisting of a .dbf (data) and a memo file (.fpt).
When I check the folder, the memo file associated with the document I was editing is actually missing from the drive.
The only WHS function that I use is remote access. I do not use the iTunes or the photo features. FoxPro has been uninstalled and reinstalled but that didn't help.
Any ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks!

I did as you suggested and the Connect people closed the bug report, labeled it as "Fixed" and basically said it's not a whs problem since we do not support Foxpro.
It is not a Foxpro problem, it's a whs problem. Foxpro is running on a local drive and accessing the data on the server. Prior to PP1, it worked flawlessly for 10 months. I installed PP1 and now it corrupts and deletes files if they are being edited while balancing is running.
I have the server throttled back to the most basic configuration, 1 500GB drive and no folder duplication is enabled. No add-ins other than toolkit 1.1 which was not installed until after PP1 was installed. I do not use Photo Webshare or the iTunes feature. I don't know what else I can do other than unplug it and find something else to use.
If I do a server recovery and take it back to the original, non-PP1, state, and do not install PP1 am I at risk if I don't add any drives?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Dick, can you please provide the Connect id for that bug report?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)Wednesday, December 17, 2008 5:24 AMModerator -

I am not sure whether my last reply was actually saved since it shows Ken's post of the 16th as the last reply, so here goes again :)
