CRM4.0 upgrade issue (SQL Server) RRS feed

  • Question

  •

This is really tricky and no idea where to go.

Basically the client has MS CRM 3.0 with our solution. That is using SQL Server 2000 Ent with SP4.

They now want to upgrade to MS CRM 4.0, which needs SQL Server 2005. So I upgraded the engine but it always fails at Reporting Services. Error number 1603 but everything else is fine.

Obviously we cannot continue to install CRM 4.0 because it requires reporting services.

What should I do? No idea where to go and spent alot of time on this ....

    Thanks

no idea what exactly to copy so I tried to copy over the relevant bits.

I also found this in the event log:

"The reporting services version is invalid"

?? Is there no way to upgrade SQL Server reporting services which was installed by MS CRM 3.0 to SQL Server 2005?

    Thanks

  • I see.  You will not be able to install 4.0 if SQL Server Reporting services 2005 is not installed.  Try this--it should work.

    1.  back up

    2.  Remove SQL Server Reporting Services 2000

    3.  Upgrade SQL 2000 to SQL 2005, Installing SRS 2005

    4.  Run the SRS Configuration Wizard, making sure not to choose Sharepoint integrated.

    5.  Uninstall and reinstall CRM 3.0, choosing the point to existing database option.  Choose the existing SRS option as well, otherwise the install will attempt to install SRS 2000.

Now you will have a fully working SQL 2005 environment with 3.0.  Install the rollups.  Then do your 4.0 upgrade.

Make sure that once you get CRM 3.0 upgraded to SQL 2005 that you back the database up.

  • Follow the steps in this document to upgrade your CRM 3.0 database to SQL 2005.

    http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?FamilyID=709f9cc7-8d53-45e8-b853-1f9e733f9774&displaylang=en

I would first upgrade 3.0 to SQL 2005, test it, make sure everything is ok (reports run, etc), then try the upgrade.

If you get stuck on reporting services, here's what I would do.

    1.  Back up any custom reports

    2.  Remove SRS 2000

    3.  Upgrade database to SQL 2005

    4.  Do the in place upgrade.  when you install 4.0 it will deploy the 4.0 versions of the reports.

  • Thanks Joel

I actually read that document and did what it pretty much stated. I upgraded SQL Server 2000 to 2005 with CRM 3.0 already being installed.

Trying to upgrade reporting services failed but my client said its ok we can leave it if it has no impact on SQL Server 2005 - well, we arent using, or anyone, reporting services so would CRM 4 be ok with this?

That's what I am worried about, if during the upgrade of CRM fails... means I am stuck and have to revert back the machine AGAIN to the state it was in, uninstalling everything and installing SQL 2000, patches, CRM3.0, attach our existing database..... and install our solution again

  • Thanks Joel.

I'm being silly but I see no option for removing SQL Server Reporting services 2000 in the add/remove programs (it was installed with CRM 3.0)

I've already upgraded to SQL 2005... is there a way to work from the current system configuration?

Now, when I go to the SQL 2005 reporting services config manager, and select database setup and press upgrade, I get this error, which matches up to the errors I get during installation:

"The database version (C.0.6.54) does not match your reporting services installation. you must upgrade your reporting services database."

  • When you upgraded to SQL 2005, was SRS 2005 installed?  If so, configure SRS 2005, reinstall CRM 3.0 and point it to your SRS 2005 reporting services site (http://server/reportserver).  You have to run the SRS configuration wizard first.

If that doesn't work, I would recommend that you call Microsoft Support and open a case.  They can help you manually remove SRS 2000 if it is still there.

  • No, SRS2005 was not installed, was just SRS2000 which was installed with MS CRM 3.0

Funny, I was thinking about opening a support ticket from my MSDN subscription about this. I appreciate all your help Joel and if you have any other ideas or suggestions, please feel fre to post.

    you've been great!

    Joel....just thought I would update

made a VPC image with WS2003 EE, updates, SQL 2000 Ent, CRM3.0, and installed our solution.

I can see SRS2000 in control panel! (but how come not on the other computer?!)

So, I uninstalled it, and now doing an upgrade of SQL to 2005 and installing reporting services.... lets see how CRM 4.0 acts with this....

Glad to hear it.  Once you get it upgraded to 4.0 on the virtual, you could always just do fresh install of 4.0 on the CRM server and import the database in as a new org, assuming that it is Enterprise version.

  • Upgraded nicely. How on earth did it work on this environment. I can't uninstall reporting services 2000 on the other computer since it doesnt show up in the control panel add/remove programs :-/

Joel... you've been great and much appreciate it. I'll buy you a drink on me hopefully maybe if you are at the next MVP summit Smile

  • Hi Joel. Sorry to bother you again (or anyone else)

Works fine on the VPC environment but not the live server/production. I have done this a few times now and fails at the same point.

First is to enable full text searching, so I do this then continue and immediately I get this:

    Action Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Server.InstallDatabaseAction failed.

There is already an object named 'AttributeTypes' in the database.

    ???

if I continue, I get the same error message.

    any ideas?

  • Have you seen this?
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946590/en-us

That error can happen when SQL Server replication is enabled.

I did read that but still didn't work. When I right click on the replication folder there is no Disable Publishing and Distribution option. The Local Publication and Subscriptions folders are empty under this node.
