Questions on Managed and Unmanaged Solutions MS CRM 2011 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I had couple of questions regarding solutions in MS CRM 2011.

    1) Can the components of Managed solution file be added to a unmanaged solution and then can we export unmanaged? Reason for this from a managed solution we require only specific components and should export only that. Is it possible?

    2) I have a unmanaged solution in the organization. I want to have managed solution in the place of unmanaged one. So I can export unmanaged as a managed and again import managed solution after deleting unmanaged. Am I correct or is there any other method to convert Unmanaged to managed within org.

    Regards,

    Ravi

  • 1) I would say this is not possible. Let's say you have installed a third party product as a managed solution (filtered lookups or maybe AX<->CRM-connector), you will not be able to export this managed solution from dev and install it on test. However, if you have the solution-file that you used to install into the dev environment in the beginning, it will work fine ofcourse. You cannot pick components from the managed solution, put them in an unmanaged solution and get them (the managed components) exported. They are "protected" and requires the original solution-file.

  • For #1 - You cannot directly edit the components within a managed solution, If the managed properties for solution components are set to allow customization, you can edit them in the Customizations area or from another unmanaged solution.

  • I agree with Peter here. If you export an entity that was modified as a part of managed solution, you will not be able to import this solution on another system unless you import the original managed solution first.

I have seen this behavior in actual example our end once before and it worked so.

  • Sam and Peter are right.

I just tested it.  Here are my finding

It let you add the resource from managed solution to unmanaged solution.

When you export the solution. It will export the solution without any error. But it just add the reference of the managed resource to the solution. It does not actually add the managed resource to the solution.

Did I say Sam and Peter are right.

I hope you got your aanswer.
