updates do not download

  when i hit the download buttoni get dialoge boxes that say the updates are down loading but the status bar does not move and within a second or two i get another box that says updatesbare downloaded and ready t install but  they nevre do. i can search the intrenet ,ropen webpages pages from searche and downloaded most anythin i want except security updates . my last succesfull upwas was around june or july of last year.
