Alternatives to WHS (Windows) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've worked with Windows Home Server and though I love the folder duplication, the computer backups and more... I am finding it difficult as a Media Centre OS. The reason I am having troubles, is WHS is essentially a glorified Server 2003 which in my eyes wasn't designed for multimedia media centre use.

I know there are Linux alternatives out there, but the coding nightmare in Terminal to do installations and maintenance is ridiculous.  I'd like to run Windows XP Pro or maybe Windows 7, but I need recommendations on software that can also perform folder backups across multiple drives and even computer backup.

I realize this way won't be as simple and automated as WHS... but WHS has caused me headaches I know would not occur in a Windows XP/7 environment.

Is there any software out there that can do it?

    Thanks!

  • As far as I know, there's nothing out there that really could serve as a Media Center equivalent of Windows Home Server. There's lots of softare that does small pieces, but nothing that's going to come close to doing everything. So you're going to have to piece togehter a solution which, in all probability, won't work as well as Windows Home Server does.

Unfortunately, this being the Windows Home Server forum it's really not the place for your search.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
