Shutdown Exception

Question

Has anyone had this issue, everytime I try to shutdown the server in the WHSConsole, I get a "Shutdow Exception" error with an icon of a little house with a message that reads "Failed to turn off" and a button that reads "OK". This also happens when I try to restart the server. Any suggestions?
Thanks.Saturday, February 21, 2009 2:16 PM

UPDATE: I went home for lunch and went to the server and I am able to shutdown and restart from the server, did not have time to check anything else and I am afraid to do anything from work in case something bad happens and my wife is no longer able to access her files. So, when I get home I will try from a client PC using the WHS Console.

Hi,
have not seen such issues before.
Can you login locally to the desktop of your server and check the event log for related error messages?
Also try to shutdown via the Start button from the server desktop. Does this function of fails as well? If fails, what is the error message exactly?

Yes, I have tried shutting down from the start button and nothing happens, the log doesn't even show an attempt to shutdown or restart, it's like the shutdown and restart is a dead button. I just tried it again from work by loggin in remotely and now I cannot get back in, although I can still access shared folders. Sorry it took so long to respond back.Thursday, February 26, 2009 1:44 PM

Maybe try to power off with one of the following methods:
Short press the power button while logged in. Usually this is configured to force a soft shutdown.
Open a command prompt on the server and type the command
shutdown /f /s /t 10
This should also enforce a shutdown within 10 seconds.
Finally the hard way: Hold down the power button until the machine powers off. (May be a bit risky for your data and should not be done while backup operation is active.
After it's booted up again, check if soft shutdown now works again.
