Free space of WHS is seen larger than Total size for mapped network drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I don't remember when it starts behaving this way. But I remember that it didn't do this in the past.

I am using Vista as client and map several folders from WHS as network drive. One usage of this is to record TV to network drive directly.

I am using 500GB HDD as the system drive so that the total size of the network drive is seen as 465GB. However since I have 2TB free space in WHS, Vista shows that the free space of the network drive as 2TB which is larger than the total size of the network drive. Even it has plenty space, Vista still shows that the drive as RED as it doesn't have any free space.  So when I schedule TV recording, MCE complains that there is not enough space for recording.

I am sure that it didn't behaves that way and the free space shown in Vista Explorer was always less than 465GB and TV recording was no problem at all.

Is this behavior related with PP1? If yes, is there any way to change this in WHS?

  • Hi,

this is a known (cosmetic) issue, which has been introduced with a fix for a problem, which Vista had copying files to network shares on the home server (since Vista only checked the available space on the share size against the free space on the D: drive of the server). (See also this FAQ.)

  •  I use 'Symbolic link' to define path for MCE to record TV to shared folder and MCE claims that 'not enough space' for recording'. Do you think that this is linked with this issue? When I right click the 'Symbolic link' I get the similar information as the network drive. I don't know how Vista calculate whether there is enough space or not for recoding the TV.

Another question, can I get rid of this issue?

  • I don't think this is related, since AFAIK recording MCE TV to a shared folder on WHS is not supported currently and can only be accquired with some creative (read unsupported) workarounds, documented here.

You can get rid of the issue and restore the former behavior by uninstalling KB957825 on the WHS. Be aware, that other bugfixes and changes will be removed as well.

  • Thanks for the reply. I still feel that his is related. There is better way to record MCE TV on WHS (I understand that it is not supproted) which is described here. It worked well even after PP1 is installed.

I will try to do some investigation on this and report back.

  • I can't find KB957825 from 'Add or Remove Programs' and I don't know how to uninstall it. Anyone can give me a hint?

Consider yourself warned about the potential dire consequences of messing around with the administrator's desktop (and the warnings are not without cause).

    To remove that KB:

    • Log in to your server through Remote Desktop.
    • Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs.
    • Click the check box next to Show Updates.
    • Look for Update for Windows Home Server (KB957825) installed on or about 11/26/2008.

It is possible that you will see "This update cannot be removed." under the patch when you select it. If so, as it says you won't be able to remove it. This is dependent on what other updates you may have applied to your server and what other software you may have installed. (For example, my test server shows this.)

Also, if you remove it, it is possible that some future patch or the forthcoming Power Pack 2 will require it, and therefore will either not install (and you will no longer be able to apply WHS patches and updates) or will force it's reinstallation.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
