I'm now very much favoring Steve's suggestion of contacting OneCare support for them to take control of your system remotely for a look at that adware infection. It doesn't seem to me that a tune-up scan should be running that slowly, even after 5 weeks of inactivity, unless the adware was somehow interfering with it, or else you have an older security program still partially installed that's creating contention with your scan, but I would think that would have shown up in previous tune-ups. In any event, they will be able to help you get at the source of the problem without the confusion that trying to work with a new utility has created for you. Sorry, I thought perhaps we could speed up the resolution of this problem without doing that.

What you haven't done is to run cleanmgr outside of OneCare:
Start > Run > type "cleanmgr" > click OK
When cleanmgr gets through calculating how much space can be reclaimed, note how much space Compress Old Files can reclaim. Click OK. If cleanmgr then hangs on you, try to Run cleanmgr again and see if any space was actually regained after it was run compared to what you noted previously. To work around a hang or a compression failure, try highlighting Compress old files and doubling the Compress after # of days in its Options, as it's an arbitrary number, or else try turning Compress Old Files off by unchecking it. Cleanmgr is the system utility called by OneCare during a tune-up.

it didnt freeze on the clean up,and didnt really have much to remove or compress it was done in a minute or 2.
i dont understand what you mean by---To work around a hang or a compression failure, try highlighting Compress old files and doubling the Compress after # of days in its Options, as it's an arbitrary number
highlighting it were?
and doubling the compress? how? were?Thursday, November 6, 2008 12:15 AM -
OK, got you about the cleanmgr utility, scandisk is a somewhat different utility.
What I'm suggesting is to either modify the setting for the number of days that go by without accessing a particular file before it's compressed, which is one of the Options for Compress old files. That Options button will show up if you single click (and thereby select) "Compress old files" when running cleanmgr. By doing that any file would have to age twice as long before it was selected for compression, but there is no hard and fast rule how long that should be, so you could potentially avoid a file that's giving you problems. An even stronger work-around would be to uncheck "Compress old files" so that no files are ever compressed and the hanging step is totally bypassed. Unless you're tight on disk space, compression is probably un-necessary.
All this is assuming you're hung in the step "Compress old files", which is why I asked that you note the amount of space before and after a compression was attempted, so you could tell if all files were actually being compressed (a report of zero KB space available to be saved after compression) or if it was hanging in that step and not completing it (more than zero KB reported as recoverable). The main point to be aware of is that OneCare uses the Cleanmgr utility to do its disk clean-up, so the options/settings that have been set in Cleanmgr are also the settings that OneCare will use when it runs its own tune-up.

Just a note that I've moved this thread to the Tune-up topic folder.
And a reminder that you can contact support for help since the hang happens during a OneCare Tune-up.
