Cleaning Up Live Mesh Folders on 2 Machines RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've been using Microsoft Live Mesh for a few months now.  It's a good tool BUT, As Mesh creates a meshed folder on the DESKTOP of the 'peer' machine both my laptop and a desktop machine looks as if they've been hit by a flock of flying blue folders.

I started to move the folders one-by-one, following the process:

[1] stop sharing; [2] move file [3] re-share [4] point the newly-created shortcut that appears on the desktop to the new location ...  However, as I'm not sure which machine some of the meshed folders were originated on, I was wondering if the best approach would be to remove ALL folders from the Mesh, copy vital files into new locations, and start again so that I can get the newly-meshed files on the second computer into the My Documents (Win 7) folder.

    A.  It this a sensible idea?

    B. Could someone please give step-by-step instructions on deleting all files from the mesh, including removing files from the the remote desktop.

    C. Could someone advise on the BEST WAY to ensure Meshed folders on the 2nd computer don't end up on the desktop, please.

    Thanks very much

  • I believe that A is your best solution to make sure that all things are clean. It doesn't matter, though, where the folder originated  if you are moving the Mesh folders from the desktop after removing the folder from the Mesh on each PC.

As for C, the shortcut always appears on the desktop first, but there have been reports that indicate that the folder is created directly without the option to selectthe destination. The expected behavior is a shortcut for the offered folder until you click it and select OK or Browse to a location to merge with.

Double clicking when it is faded light blue folder, brings you to a windows titled:

    Synchronize folder

The text at the top of the window says "Synchronize folder with this computer."

    The name cannot be changed/

The location is the path to your desktop folder.

    Next to this is browse.

At the bottom of the Window is OK and Cancel.

OK accepts the default offered location - your desktop.

If you click OK, it will become a darker blue folder (still light blue) and it is now fixed to your desktop.

If you click Browse, you can navigate to a folder of your choosing.

Once you have reached that folder, click OK and accept the warning about merging with an existing folder and potential for conflicts.

  • For B, by the way, once you change the folders to not sync with the Mesh for all PCs at www.mesh.com then all local files/folders are not in the Mesh and you'll need to choose what to do - manually move or delete the local files/folders.
