After completing evaluation of the the OneCare 2.0 Beta, I ran a normal uninstall (from add remove programs). After reboot, I could no longer access my CD ROM. Uninstalling and rediscovering the drive did not help. The device manager could see the drive but on inspection reported that there was missing or corrupted data in the registry that prevented the drive from being accessable. My next step was to run system restore only to discover that uninstalling OneCare 2.0 does not set a restore point. I went back to the next earlier available restore point and and ran restore. On reboot, I could see and use the CD-ROM. OneCare was back (sort of) but all red and reporting that the virus checker, back up, and the firewall were turned off. None of the functions would turn on. After some reading, I discovered the OneCare clean up tool and tried running that with the same result as the first uninstall (no CD-ROM). I tried reinstalling the beta, but the installer says the progam is already loaded and won't continue. I have looked at the registry in both conditions and cannot find any difference other than the device name is missing when I can't access the CD-ROM. Adding the appropriate string to the registry makes no difference. All this is in XP media center 2005, but the machine is dual boot with Vista64 Ultimate, so repairs of the XP load are at a minimum difficult. The machine is a 975 chipset with a Q6600 processor and 4GB of ram. Any insight on how to uninstall the OneCare beta without destroying the rest of my XP load would be appreciated.
