pc's power supply not working RRS feed

  • you are working on a computer that beeps and shows drive activity when you press the power button. the monitor's power light comes on, but no image is displayed. you try a different monitor and it works just fine. do this conditions indicate a problem with the pc's power supply?

  • No, if the computer lights up the power supply is ok. If you still have the computer's manual, look for the pattern of beeps and the error that corresponds to it. Try with only the monitor, keyboard, and mouse connected. Also remove any recent hardware changes, like a PCI card. Sometimes if hardware connected is not comparable with the motherboard it will not boot. If this does not work its the graphics card or the hard disk. What is the pattern of beeps? What is the model number of the computer? Also, I think this is the wrong section to post this question.

  • If a different monitor works fine on that computer, then you've identified the problem with 99.9% confidence: the monitor with no image has failed; it powers up but does not display an image. It's a fairly common way for monitors to fail.
