Using Restore CD to different ver of windows?

Question
-
I had a major crash of Windows 7...the boot loader was corrupted. Since Win7 doesn't format I used the original WinXP disk and reformatted and installed winXP. Can I just use the Restore CD to put the backup from WHS back onto the computer or do I have to reinstall Win7 first? Thanks for your help!Saturday, June 6, 2009 12:24 AM

Although 7 is not officially supported at this time, yes, you should be able to use the restore CD to restore your most recent backup of your OS (without installing 7 first). Note that if you are running a 64-bit version of 7, you might need to find a 32-bit version of your NIC driver.- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Saturday, June 6, 2009 12:38 AM

I still had a boot manger missing issue. I installed one from the Ultimate Boot Disk, which works fine. Now I'm restoring Win7 again.
Question: the first backup I tried had TWO different "drives" to backup from. One said system and was 100MB and the other said C and was 173GB. Any idea why it has that and what it is for? Thanks!Saturday, June 6, 2009 5:25 AM -

The 100 MB partition is the "System Reserved" partition created during 7 installation. It's apparently used for system recovery and BitLocker encryption. See the thread Is it possible to install RC1 without the 100mb bitlocker partition? for more details.Saturday, June 6, 2009 2:54 PMModerator -
Thanks kariya21! I'll check that out.
I used a different backup that didn't have the "System Reserved" partition and it worked beautifully. I'm not sure why one would work and the other doesn't because they are both from the same computer using the same version of Windows (7). Anyway, I appreciate everyone's help.Saturday, June 6, 2009 9:39 PM
