Can I keep using MS Money2006? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have used Money (Canadian version) for many years, 2006 being the latest version I bought. The program does all that I need. I just reinstalled it on my laptop after upgrading my hard drive. I have read about Money Sunset and wondered if this is something I should switch to, or can I just keep using Money 2006? It appears that the Sunset version should be used to remove the activation dependency; I was not asked to do anything related to activation when I installed Money 2006 on my laptop, or on my desktop when I replaced it last year. Is there any advantage to be gained by switching to Sunset?

  • Advantages would be fairly small. My favorite is the multiple backups. If you are getting quotes directly now, you would lose that.

  • Thanks for the reply.

I don't get quotes, but that is not important.

What do you mean by multiple backups?

  • Now that I think of it, multiple backup file feature that was introduced with 2006 Money. You may be using it. Here is how I like to use it:

    I suggest checking
x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money
Save in [a place on your hard drive ]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
       x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

x Perform scheduled backups every _14_ days
Save in [a USB flash drive location]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
       x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste,
but Money 2007 does not automatically trim to USB as it should]

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest
backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR.  With XP, this can be a
copy and paste operation.  Otherwise use the burning software that
    came with your CDR drive.

  • Thanks - I already backup my Money files, much as you describe. I thought you were perhaps referring to something else.

So am I correct in assuming that there would be no advantage (or disadvantage) to switching to Money Sunset? It doesn't seem to do anything that Money 2006 doesn't already do for me, and it doesn't remove anything that Money does.

    I appreciate your input.

  • There would be no net advantage.
