WINDOWS VISTA PRODUCT KEY INVALID!?!???? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I own a full OEM Windows Vista Home Premium.  i had it fully activated and it was running fine.  Then i reinstalled it and activated it again because i had some viruses.  then i reinstaleld it again and activated it.  then a couple days later i log in and there is no desktop and a 'windows activation' window pops up.  i have the options of activating online now, access your comp w/ reduced funtionality, retype your product key, and shjow me other ways to activate. activating online does not work.  and when i type the product key in it says its invalid,  but when i called microsoft they said its valid so it really agrivating. when i go to the automated phone system option NO INSTALLITION ID comes up.  jsut the number 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9.  And i accidentally broke my cd of vsita so i cant reinstall... soo is there any way i can purchase a new product key?  and possibly a new cd?

i tried the slmgr and WGA and they dont work.

    Hello (l)singlesexymommyof2(l),

Since you did not provide any additional information, I do not know if your issue is similar to the original poster's or if it is different in some way.  So I am only diagnosing what I see.

The error code"0xc004c4a8" means your Vista is not currently Activated. To activate Vista, please follow the below option that that best fix your given issue scenario:

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enterand follow steps to Activate over the Phone.

NOTE: The key to this process is that you need to talk to a Live Activation Rep! When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to tansfer you to a Live Rep.

  • ok so i have a similar problem to the thread starter. I just got a used dell laptop with vista home premium installed. so i return from the post office, open it, turn it on and start installing the basics apps. after i finished installing the webcam software i restarted. when i came back i saw it was asking me for a product key so i looked for it and typed it. it said it was wrong/invalid and it let me access with reduced functionality and nothing else. i cant see the desktop nor the start button so i pretty much cant do anything.
i considered reinstalling vista but i figured its only the product key i need so i didnt. so my question is....where do i find/buy a new product key or how do i restore the one i have?? is it even possible?

as i said, the laptop is used, bought in the US and shipped it to me here in mexico. is that a factor?
    any thoughts? i´m getting desperate.
    thanks in advance

I'm not sure whether the corruption evident in the last section of your report is from your copy/paste, or whether it is present in the BIOS.
Either way, it looks as if there is a problem with your computer not being able to confirm that the BIOS is valid for the OS.
The solution is either to  reflash the BIOS with a valid version (risky - do not attempt this without advice), or to use the COA_SLP key from the sticker on your computer's case.
to change the Key, go to the System Properties page, and at the bottom, you should find the option to change the Key - use that, and then activate by phone.
