Windows 7 Build 7600 - Genuine Issues on Packard Bell EasyNote :-( RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Looking for some help please my learned friends:-)

My friend was going to throw out his laptop - I've rescued it. It is a little unwell. I've attached the diagnostic report. There is a product key sticker on the reverse of the laptop with a microsoft hologram. I don't have a windows disc. From what i can gather the windows came with the laptop. I'm unsure whether it has been activated. I've tried typing in the product key on the sticker in slui. Says it doesn't recognise it. If I could let you see the sticker looks the genuine article. I don't know whether somewhere along the lines things have become scrambled. I hope to hear from you :-)

The current OS is certainly NOT the one that came with the computer - it's over 3 years too old for that.
You need to contact the manufacturer, and order a set of Recovery disks for that machine, and reinstall the system using them.

  • Thanks Noel for the heads up.

I noticed from the Diagnostics report that the product key did not match up with the product key sticker label on the reverse of the laptop.

Is it worth going down the path and trying to get the product key displayed on the sticker label to be the same as that showing in the diagnostics report? OR am I best to take the hit in my pocket and purchase a new windows licence? Afterall, I got the laptop for free. Just want it to work with a genuine operating system. Seems strange that somewhere along it's life the product key has been changed as i can't see my friend being that computer savvy to make any changes....

  • The key on the label is for the original copy of Windows that came preinstalled on the computer. That was most likely Vista so it will not work with Windows 7. Just order the recovery disks from the manufacturer or a third party like Recovery-Disks.com.

...in addition, if you want to purchase Win 7 to use that, you'll need either to have the Recovery disks, do that you can use the original activated OS to upgrade from (using an Upgrade pack), or a Full Retail Win 7 for the install - the price difference between the two will pay for the Recovery disks:)
