  • Dreadlessdream,

The 0x80004005 error on the Key Updater Utility is almost always indicative of the computer not being able to fully communicate with MS servers.  The Key Updater has to have full access to the servers in order to validate about 6,000 files.  Misconfigured firewalls, antivirus programs, antispyware protective programs, and misconfigured ISP DNS servers have been known to cause the error you are seeing.

Please address these possibilities and try again.  Some previous posters have reported that temporarily changing to different DNS servers helped them work around the problem.  You may want to try the settings at www.opendns.com.

  • I run two machines here, both use a genuine VLK, and both worked fine until I installed the windows defender system. To cut a long story short, ths is what gave me the 0x80004005 problems. I removed defender and all was well. Its a shame that it cost me 3 hours so look forward to the compensation from MS

As I posted, "Misconfigured firewalls, antivirus programs, antispyware protective programs, and misconfigured ISP DNS servers have been known to cause the error you are seeing."

Windows Defender is an antispyware program.

  • Thats not right, removing all firewalls, antivirus, and reconfiguring the DNS, just wastes extra hours of  time and this doesnt solve the problem.

I have also a laptop into today, with its own copy of windows, same problem, removed defender and updates fine.

  • Progress.......and good news

I reinstalled defender, now works (strange that), no differences on either machine, one of those strange quirks I think.......although, if you run spybot and try and update, back comes the old 80004005....

SO in summary, cant be the firewall (still running), cant be the virus (still avg free) it isnt the spyware (so appologies for claiming that), it isnt the DNS settings (as the same)............oh I see, its the updating servers...............
