vista not speaking to xp workgroup RRS feed

  • Question

  •   HI All

I urgent need some help, in the past i had my laptop ( xp home) & base unit xp pro setup so that the xp pro system shard its slave drive as read only.

The only issue is that on my new vista system I cannot seem to do this, although they are on the same work group with the drive in question set to "f" (shared) on the vista system. I am using wired via a internet router that states they are connected fine and can use the work group.

Vista stated that it could see the laptop but said it was unable to connect to it, with no resolution.

After tinchering the vista system cannot see the laptop at all. The laptop in question could not see vista in the work group during any point in the above process.

Can you help me, i am only using windows firewall and both p.c's can use the internet via the router no problem.

I just want a simple workgroup etup so vista can have full access to one directory on the laptop and the laptop can read the f drive.

    Please help.

  • Hi MAB333,

you might want to repost this via http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/default.aspx?ForumGroupID=204&SiteID=17
This is IT Pro related, and not quite in the right place, that's why you ain't getting any replies, sorry.

You can establish to see if this is a firewall issue but turning off both firewalls on a safe network.
If you set your Vista into a Public network, you can get problems with the firewall because it goes into a more secure mode to protect your machine. If you might want to try loading it into Work or Home networks.
