SyncToy 2.0 error code 25017 RRS feed

  • Question

  • During execution of SyncToy I got the following error message:

SyncToy cannot access its internal metadata file in one of the folders being synchronized.:
     Microsoft.Synchronization.MetadataStorage.MetadataStorageEngineException: A storage engine operation failed with error code 25017 (HRESULT = 0x80004005, Source IID = {0C733A8B-2A1C-11CE-ADE5-00AA0044773D}).

Rerunning the program during day time gives the same message.
The backup drive is an external USB connected drive.
I'm not a tecnician in this area.

    The complete log is:

What can I do about it?

  • Hi,

SyncToy needs to build and maintain metadata files (often looks like “SyncToy_0C733A8B-2A1C-11CE-ADE5-00AA0044773D.dat”) in sync folders. You issue seems that SyncToy has problems to access such metadata file.

SyncToy may meet access problem with the following reasons:
    1. Metadata file was removed by accident.
    2. Metadata file was locked, maybe by another SyncToy instance.
    3. The OS security settings disallowed SyncToy to access the metadata file.

The 3rd reason is the most common condition that causes your problem. And it often happens on Window Vista. For such condition, the link http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/synctoy/thread/5c021aa1-8738-47af-854d-c38d635800ac may help you.

    Thanks.

  • Hi -

Are you using Windows Home Server ( WHS ) by any chance? We have seen people report this issue previously only under this configuration.

    Thanks
